The High Court granted a winding-up petition against COH Sports Bidco Limited, the company used to acquire Sheffield United, on 19 August 2026. The reporting does not say Sheffield United Football Club itself entered administration, and the club said its day-to-day operations were unaffected. The EFL was still considering the regulatory implications in the latest report available, dated 7 October 2026.
Which company did the High Court order affect?
The order concerned COH Sports Bidco Limited, the acquisition company used when COH Sports bought Sheffield United in December 2024. Reuters, carried by The Straits Times, reported that a judge at the High Court in London granted United World Holding Limited’s winding-up petition on 19 August 2026. That is not the same as a report that Sheffield United Football Club itself entered administration.
The club told The Independent that the matter was between the current and former owners, and said: “The football club is in contact with the English Football League and the day-to-day operations at Sheffield United are unaffected.” That statement describes the club’s position at the time; it does not decide the debt dispute or the EFL’s review.
What is the dispute with Prince Abdullah’s United World?
United World, the former owner’s group, says about £35 million remains unpaid from the sale. The Guardian reported that COH Sports, led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, agreed to buy the club for about £100 million in December 2024 and paid an initial instalment of about £30 million. The remaining balance is a claim reported by the parties and the press, not a debt finding established by the cited reports.

The Guardian said the current owners acknowledged that about £35 million was owed, while saying the parent-company restructuring and the debt dispute were unrelated. United World alleged that the company structure had been changed in a way that could frustrate payment. The reporting does not establish that allegation as fact or identify a court finding that avoiding creditors was the purpose of the restructuring.
Why is the ownership structure part of the story?
Sheffield United announced in June 2026 that Delaware-based 1919 Partners LLC was its parent company and sat at the centre of the ownership structure, according to reporting by The Guardian and Reuters. United World said the change appeared intended to avoid paying creditors. That remains United World’s allegation; the cited reports do not establish the motive as a court finding.

Could Sheffield United lose points?
The EFL said it was considering the implications of the winding-up order under its regulations, including whether further action was required. In July, the league said it had requested observations from relevant parties and could not comment further while the process continued.
In a BBC Radio Sheffield interview reported by BBC Sport on 7 October 2026, Sheffield United chief executive Stephen Bettis said the club did not expect a points deduction and that the owners would “fight hard” if one were imposed. BBC Sport reported that an insolvency event can trigger the possibility of a 12-point penalty under EFL rules. That is a reported potential consequence, not a penalty the league had announced or imposed in the report.

The latest cited reporting said the EFL investigation was continuing. It did not give a final decision or timetable, so Bettis’s expectation should not be read as the regulator’s ruling.
