The delay stemmed from the club’s administration, a first preferred bidder’s withdrawal, the need to assess replacement buyers and creditor proposals, and a deadline approaching for the football regulator handover.
Has Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover happened yet?
Yes. The EFL said on 2 May 2026 that the administrators had concluded an agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC, the club had met the relevant league requirements, and Sheffield Wednesday was no longer regarded as being in administration for EFL purposes. Joint administrator BTG confirmed completion on 5 May. EFL completion statement · BTG completion announcement.

Arise is a consortium led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The completion announcements reviewed do not state the final purchase price, so the £47.8 million figure associated with the earlier bid should not be treated as the price Arise paid.
Why did the process take so long?
Administration made the sale more complex
Sheffield Wednesday entered administration in October 2025. Selling a club in administration involves more than agreeing a price: prospective owners must satisfy the EFL’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test, and administrators must address the club’s funding and creditors. The EFL says its test sets criteria for who may own a club or exercise control over it, and applies to current and prospective owners on an ongoing basis. EFL Owners’ and Directors’ Test.

The first preferred bidder withdrew
James Bord’s consortium was selected as preferred bidder in December 2025, but withdrew on 25 February 2026 from its proposed £47.8 million takeover. BBC Sport reported that financial and background checks had proved challenging, significant documentation remained outstanding, and the consortium considered the club worth less than its bid. The report said the consortium could not renegotiate the bid downward under its agreement. These are reported explanations, not findings in a published EFL decision. BBC Sport report on the withdrawal.
Once that bid fell through, administrators had to continue with other interested parties while the club remained in administration. BBC Sport reported that the failed bidder had funded the club’s losses during the process and that administrators said the club remained operational and funded for the rest of that season.
Creditor proposals affected the points decision
The EFL insolvency policy was reported as connecting a creditor repayment threshold of 25 pence in the pound with the risk of a further 15-point deduction in the following season. At completion, however, the EFL said its board had considered proposals made to the former owner by the joint administrators and new owners and decided that a further 15-point deduction was not appropriate. That was a discretionary decision; the completion statement does not say simply that the club met the threshold. EFL completion statement · BBC Sport report.
The final stretch was deadline-sensitive
BBC Sport reported that final paperwork was completed on 1 May 2026, shortly before the Independent Football Regulator was due to take over the new-owner process on 5 May. The proximity of that handover made the timing significant, but the available statements do not establish it as the sole cause of the delay. BBC Sport report on the takeover timeline.

What changed when the deal completed?
The EFL confirmed that the club would avoid the additional 15-point deduction, while accepting budget restrictions for two seasons. Player registrations must comply with a business plan agreed by the new owners and the EFL. EFL completion statement.
BTG also said wage and transfer parameters had been agreed. Those details describe the arrangements at completion; they do not, by themselves, establish how the club will perform under its new ownership. BTG completion announcement.
Why do Companies House records still show administration filings?
Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited’s Companies House filing history lists an administrator’s proposal filed on 5 March 2026, a progress report filed on 2 June, a creditors’ meeting result filed on 16 July, and a notice extending the administration filed on 30 August 2026. Those are corporate-record entries for the company. They do not contradict the EFL’s 2 May statement that the club was no longer regarded as in administration for league purposes; the filing-history index alone does not explain the legal scope of the later extension.
