PerthNow recounted the cases on 16 January 2024; its figures and claim-deadline details are historical, not a current update from Lotterywest.
Three tickets, three near misses
| Case | What happened | Reported prize |
|---|---|---|
| Bayswater tradesman | A January 2020 ticket bought at Ballajura City Lottery Centre and Post Office remained in his vehicle’s glove box for more than a month. | $1,089,093 |
| Riverton ticket | A ticket bought at Willetton Newsagency was claimed with only months remaining in the extended claim period described by PerthNow. | $613,000 |
| Scarborough couple | A Division One ticket sold at Michael’s Health Care Chemist in Wembley was left in the winner’s pocket for a week over the festive season. | $2.3 million |
The glove-box ticket
The Bayswater tradesman told PerthNow that work travel and a postponed course delayed him checking the ticket. “I work away, and due to the cyclone up north, I was held up over Christmas and New Year,” he said. When his course was postponed, he decided to check the ticket and discovered, as he put it, that he had “$1 million sitting in my glove box.” The reported prize was $1,089,093.
The claim made close to the deadline
The Riverton ticket’s $613,000 prize was claimed with just months left in the extended claim period, according to the article. It said the usual Division One claim period had been extended from 12 months to 24 months because of COVID-19 implications. That describes the rule as PerthNow reported it in January 2024; it does not establish Lotterywest’s current deadline.
The ticket in the pocket
A Scarborough couple came forward for a $2.3 million Division One prize after the winning ticket had remained in the winner’s pocket for a week over the festive season. Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said: “I’m just glad the winner didn’t jump in the pool or wash his trousers before checking the ticket.”

What PerthNow reported as still unclaimed in January 2024
At the time its article was published on 16 January 2024, PerthNow said two prizes remained unclaimed: a $1 million Wednesday Lotto ticket sold by Jackpot Lottery Centre in Mirrabooka and a $2.5 million ticket sold by Good Fortune Lottery Centre in Maddington. Together, they were worth $3.5 million. This is a dated snapshot only; it does not indicate whether either prize remains unclaimed now.
What the stories do—and do not—show
Each case illustrates a different way a ticket can go unchecked: being forgotten in a vehicle, a claim being made late in the period reported by the article, or a ticket remaining in clothing. The three accounts do not provide evidence about lottery odds or establish that one way of storing a ticket is statistically riskier than another.
