Sheffield Wednesday went into administration on 24 October 2025, but the EFL announced on 2 May 2026 that the club had transferred its assets to new owner Arise Capital Partners and was no longer regarded as being in administration. Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership ended, according to BBC Sport. Hillsborough’s position is less clear: the 2025 announcement included the company that owned the stadium, but the later EFL statement does not establish the ground’s final legal ownership.
What happened, and when?
| Date | What was announced | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 24 October 2025 | The EFL said formal notice had been received that steps were taken to appoint administrators to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and the company owning Hillsborough. The league said an automatic 12-point deduction followed under its regulations. EFL statement | Administration was a completed event, not a possibility still facing the club. |
| 2 May 2026 | The EFL said administrators had agreed to transfer the club’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch. It said the club under new ownership was no longer regarded as being in administration. EFL statement | The club’s league status changed following the asset-transfer agreement. BBC Sport reported the takeover ended Chansiri’s ownership. BBC Sport |
| 2 May 2026 | The EFL said it would not impose a further 15-point deduction on exit from administration. It set a budget restriction for the next two seasons and said player registrations would be subject to the agreed business plan. EFL statement | The additional deduction was waived, but financial and registration conditions remained. |
Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?
The EFL’s 2 May 2026 announcement identifies Arise Capital Partners LLC as the party that agreed to acquire the club’s assets. BBC Sport described the deal as a takeover by a US consortium and reported that Chansiri’s ownership had ended. These announcements establish the change in club ownership and league status; they do not, by themselves, establish who legally owns Hillsborough today.

Does Hillsborough remain in administration?
The EFL’s October 2025 statement said the company owning Hillsborough was among the entities for which administrators were appointed. Its May 2026 statement describes the transfer of the club’s assets and the club’s exit from administration, but does not spell out the stadium’s conveyance or the final status of Sheffield 3 Limited, the separate company associated with Hillsborough.
Companies House’s filing history for Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited lists an administrator’s progress report filed on 2 June 2026 and an administration-extension notice filed on 30 August 2026. Those are filings for that named company; they do not resolve the separate stadium-owning company’s status or prove that Hillsborough transferred with the club’s assets. Accordingly, the EFL’s statement that the club was no longer regarded as in administration should not be read as confirmation that every connected company had exited administration or that the stadium’s ownership had been settled.

Sheffield City Council said it had lifted a prohibition notice affecting Hillsborough’s North Stand after structural engineers’ specified immediate remedial work was completed and verified. The council also referred to a programme of further works. The notice being lifted is not evidence that every stadium repair, maintenance task or redevelopment project is complete. Quick Recap
What supporters should take from the update
- The club’s administration began in October 2025 and the EFL confirmed its change of status after the May 2026 asset-transfer agreement.
- The club’s points and operating conditions are distinct: the EFL confirmed the automatic 12-point deduction in 2025, then waived a further 15-point deduction on exit while retaining a two-season budget restriction and business-plan conditions for player registrations.
- Club ownership and stadium ownership are not interchangeable questions. The EFL’s public announcement does not settle Sheffield 3 Limited’s legal position or conclusively identify Hillsborough’s current owner.
- The council’s North Stand notice update concerns specified remedial work and a continuing programme, not a declaration that all stadium works are finished.
