Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover is complete: the English Football League confirmed on 2 May 2026 that the club’s assets had been transferred to Arise Capital Partners LLC. The club is no longer regarded as being in administration, although EFL budget and player-registration restrictions will continue under an agreed business plan. Mike Ashley was reported as a leading contender during the March process, but he was not the buyer named at completion. The sources cited here do not establish John Textor as a bidder in the final race.
Who bought Sheffield Wednesday?
The buyer was Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium comprising David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The EFL confirmed the completed transfer on 2 May 2026, bringing former owner Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership to an end. The EFL’s completion announcement also said the club met league requirements and was no longer considered to be in administration.

Arise had been named the club’s new preferred bidder on 10 March, after the previous preferred bidder withdrew. At the time, the administrators said Arise had provided a substantial deposit and evidence of funds. That preferred-bidder status was a step in the process; the EFL’s May announcement is the confirmation that the transfer was completed. Sheffield Wednesday’s 10 March update
What happened to the Mike Ashley and John Textor reports?
Mike Ashley was a reported contender, not the eventual buyer
On 3 March 2026, The Independent reported Mike Ashley and David Storch as leading contenders after James Bord’s consortium withdrew. That was a dated account of the race at that point—not evidence that Ashley had secured the club. Arise became preferred bidder a week later, and the completed buyer was the Storch-led consortium. John Textor’s role is not established by these reports
The sources cited here do not substantiate a John Textor bid or a final-stage role in the takeover. That does not prove he never expressed interest; it means his involvement cannot be confirmed from these accounts. It is therefore more accurate to describe the completed deal by naming Arise Capital Partners than to repeat a headline suggesting Textor was in the final race.
The “US billionaire” framing obscures the named buyer
The successful buyer was a three-person consortium, Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch. BBC Sport describes Storch as an American executive with an aviation-services background. Calling the outcome simply a US billionaire joining the race would blur the distinction between early bidder reports and the actual buyer. BBC Sport’s 2 May coverage

What the completed sale means for the club
Completion ended the administration status, but it did not remove all league oversight. The EFL said budget restrictions would apply for the following two seasons, and player registrations must comply with an agreed business plan. These are continuing conditions attached to the club’s position after the sale, rather than a statement that all financial constraints have ended. EFL announcement
The sporting context is also significant: Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation to League One had been confirmed on 22 February 2026, before the takeover completed. BBC Sport reported that the EFL did not impose a further 15-point deduction after the club exited administration. BBC Sport
