Smith & Associates announced its first Japanese site—a sales office in Tokyo—in 2007. The company said the office would help it build relationships with Japanese electronics manufacturers and provide procurement and inventory management services. A current Smith locations page lists a Tokyo address, but the available sources do not establish uninterrupted operation at that location since 2007.
What Smith announced in 2007
On January 9, 2007, EE Times reported that Smith & Associates had announced the opening of its first Japanese site, a sales office in Tokyo. The report gives the announcement date, not a separate date on which the office physically opened.
Smith described the move as the culmination of a two-year effort to develop business with Japanese Tier 1 manufacturers in computer, consumer, and automotive electronics. Doug Kelly, identified in the report as the company’s president and chief executive, said:
“Smith & Associates has a long history of partnering with top-tier Japanese computer, consumer, and automotive electronics manufacturers,” he said. “Since Toshi Sato, director of business development-Japan, joined Smith two years ago, we have been expanding these relationships, and with the addition of local sales staff, we will be able to better support our growing customer and vendor base in Japan.”

The report named Choon Byun, then Smith’s vice president of the North Asia Region, as the Tokyo office’s leader. It also identified Toshi Sato as director of business development-Japan.
What the Tokyo office was intended to do
The 2007 report said the office would provide procurement and inventory management services. Smith’s quality control, testing, and shipping facilities in Houston, Hong Kong, and Amsterdam were to support that work. This describes the office plan reported in 2007, not a current service catalog.
