Seattle startup Common Room emerged from stealth in 2021 with $52 million in total funding, according to contemporaneous launch coverage. Fenwick, which represented the company in its financing, reported $53 million instead; the available accounts do not explain the difference. Common Room was building software to help companies understand and engage their customer communities across digital platforms. In July 2026, GeekWire reported that Zoom was acquiring the company, with deal terms undisclosed.

What Common Room did

At its 2021 launch, Common Room described a platform for connecting companies with people in their communities and organizing signals from services such as Slack, Twitter and Discord. The goal was to help companies engage community members, connect users with one another and gather product feedback. Its immediate audience was community teams; CEO Linda Lian also described a longer-term opportunity to serve product, support, marketing and customer teams.

The early product was being piloted or tested by companies including Notion and Pulumi, according to GeekWire’s 2021 launch coverage. Built In also named Confluent and Figma among test companies. These reports identify pilot and test use, not necessarily paid customer relationships. Pulumi vice president of marketing Aaron Kao said the company used Common Room to analyze community engagement metrics and support community growth.

How much funding Common Room reported

The launch-era funding total depends on which contemporaneous account you use. GeekWire and Built In reported $52 million in total funding; Fenwick’s financing announcement stated $53 million. The reviewed accounts do not say why the amounts differ, so neither figure should be presented as a definitive correction of the other.

Figure What it refers to Source and context
$52 million Total funding at the stealth exit Reported by GeekWire and Built In in 2021
$53 million Financing amount Stated by Fenwick, counsel to Common Room in the financing, in 2021
$32.3 million Series B round led by Greylock Reported by GeekWire in 2021

Reported investors included Greylock, Index Ventures, Madrona Venture Group, Next Play Ventures and 01 Advisors, as well as more than 40 angel investors, according to Fenwick. GeekWire named Etsy CEO Josh Silverman, former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and former Axiom CEO Elena Donio as examples of angel backers. These figures describe financing, not revenue, valuation or product performance.

Who founded Common Room

GeekWire’s 2021 launch report named four co-founders: Linda Lian, CEO; Tom Kleinpeter, chief architect; Francis Luu, design chief; and Viraj Mody, CTO. It described the company as having fewer than 20 employees at the time. Those titles and the staff count refer to the launch period, not necessarily the company’s later structure.

The same report said Lian had worked at Madrona Venture Group and Amazon Web Services; Kleinpeter and Mody had Dropbox backgrounds; and Luu had spent a decade at Facebook. These are launch-era biographical details reported by GeekWire.

How the company’s stated focus later shifted

Common Room’s 2021 launch positioning centered on community engagement and product feedback. In a July 2, 2026 report, GeekWire said Zoom was acquiring Common Room. The report said Zoom planned to combine Common Room’s buyer intelligence with sales-call conversation data so sales representatives could identify accounts showing buying intent before calls. Deal terms were not disclosed in that report, which does not establish that the acquisition had been completed.

The two dated descriptions point to different workflows: community teams interpreting digital participation and feedback in 2021, and sales teams using buyer signals alongside call data in Zoom’s 2026 acquisition rationale. They are descriptions from separate reports, not a controlled comparison of product capabilities or evidence of measured business outcomes.

What the reported funding does—and does not—show

The funding announcement established that Common Room attracted substantial investment and had named pilots or test companies at launch. The cited coverage does not provide an independent quantified lift in customer retention, engagement, revenue or another product outcome. Funding totals and investor participation alone cannot establish whether the software achieved those results.
