Seattle Musician Launches Incantio, a Marketplace for Independent Music Licensing

Incantio aims to connect independent artists who control music rights with creators licensing tracks for projects. Its launch-era terms and current status should be distinguished.

Seattle musician Danny Newcomb launched Incantio in May 2025 as a marketplace intended to connect independent music rights holders with creators seeking tracks for advertising, film, television and other projects. Its central idea is to make licensing terms and prices easier to find, while giving artists a way to offer their music for use. Incantio is a licensing service, not an AI music generator.

What Incantio is designed to do

Incantio’s current Terms of Service describe a service for people or companies who own rights in sound recordings and the musical works embodied in them, as well as users looking to identify and license tracks. In practical terms, a rights holder makes music available; a creator searches for a track, checks the permitted use and terms, and obtains a license.

At launch, GeekWire reported that artists could retain their rights and set licensing prices, while creators could find tracks and license them. Newcomb described the launch-era experience this way: “You can go into our catalog, find an artist, know what their pricing is right away, be able to get a clean license that’s already pre-approved and license it immediately.” That is his description of the product in May 2025, not a guarantee of the current catalog, terms or workflow.

Why the marketplace may matter to artists and creators

For independent artists

Licensing can create another route for music to earn income beyond streaming or direct sales. Newcomb said the platform was intended to let artists set the value of their digital rights for licensing and “gain some of that value back.” The exact rights an artist can offer depend on what they own or are authorized to license; a marketplace listing cannot substitute for clearing rights they do not control.

For creators and production teams

A clear price and defined license can help a creator evaluate whether a track fits both a project and its budget. Before relying on any license, a buyer still needs to confirm that its scope covers the intended media, territory, duration, audience and use, and that the relevant rights are covered. The available terms describe sound recordings and the musical works embodied in them, making ownership and clearance central to the transaction.

What was reported at Incantio’s 2025 launch

GeekWire reported on May 28, 2025 that Newcomb had worked on Incantio for about two years, that the Seattle company had five people, and that it had raised a $350,000 pre-seed round led by Northwest Angel. The same report said a seed round was planned; it does not establish that a later round occurred.

GeekWire also reported early partnerships with CD Baby on the music-supply side and Disco on the demand side. Those are launch-era announcements; the sources available do not confirm whether either relationship remains active. The report named artists including Chris Ballew, Carrie Akre, Steve Fisk, Mike McCready and Kevin Murphy, and said 200 others had signed on. Those figures describe reported launch participation, not a verified current roster or catalog count.

The company was described as being in beta at the time, with revenue expected that month. Those launch-era details do not establish Incantio’s present operating stage or financial performance. Newcomb’s statement that “Half of the global music market is now independent,” also reported by GeekWire, is his attributed claim rather than an independently verified market statistic.

What to verify before licensing a track

Whether you are licensing music for a project or listing it for use, check the deal itself rather than relying on a track description alone:

  • Rights covered: Confirm the license covers both the sound recording and the underlying musical work if your project needs both.
  • Permitted use: Check that the license includes the project’s media, platforms, territory, duration and intended commercial or promotional use.
  • Restrictions and exclusivity: Review any limits on edits, audience size, reuse or exclusivity before committing.
  • Authority to license: Artists should verify that they own or control the rights being offered. Buyers should confirm the licensor has authority to grant the stated permissions.
  • Price and payment terms: Check the stated fee, any additional charges, and the applicable payout or payment conditions.

These checks matter for any music licensing transaction; the available sources do not establish Incantio’s current prices, fees, catalog size or detailed license options.

How Incantio differs from CD Baby

CD Baby is an adjacent service, not another name for Incantio. CD Baby’s current materials describe digital distribution and optional sync licensing. Its sync guidance says eligibility requires digital distribution through CD Baby and ownership of the sound recording and publishing rights, or the proper license for a cover song; sampled or royalty-free material requires checking the relevant license. These requirements are specific to CD Baby’s sync program and should not be assumed to be Incantio’s terms.

GeekWire reported CD Baby as an early Incantio partner in 2025, but that does not establish a current integration or partnership. For either service, compare rights covered, licensing scope, approval process, fees and artist control before choosing a route.

What is known about Incantio now

Incantio’s Terms of Service, accessed October 8, 2026, describe a service for music rights holders and people seeking to identify and license tracks. However, the evidence available does not establish current pricing, catalog count, operating stage, or whether the launch-era CD Baby and Disco partnerships continue. Those details should be confirmed directly with the company before making plans around a listing or license.

GeekWire’s May 28, 2025 launch report is the source for the funding, team, early participants and partnership announcements: GeekWire’s report on Incantio’s launch. Current service scope is described in Incantio’s Terms of Service. CD Baby’s service descriptions and eligibility guidance appear in its sync licensing help page and sync guidance article.
