Atomo announced a “strategic realignment and restructuring” on January 10, 2023, about six months after raising a $40 million Series A. The company said a product breakthrough would help it reach more consumers and that it planned to add specialized staff. It did not confirm layoffs or disclose an updated headcount; employees told GeekWire that workforce cuts had occurred the prior week.
What happened after Atomo raised $40 million?
Atomo’s June 2022 Series A was reported as $40 million, bringing the company’s cumulative funding to $51.5 million at that point, according to GeekWire’s January 2023 report. The funding announcement had coincided with the online launch of two canned cold brews, Classic Black and Ultra Smooth.
On January 10, 2023, Atomo described its next move as a strategic realignment and restructuring. Co-founder and CEO Andy Kleitsch said the company had “recently achieved a breakthrough that will help us reach a larger segment of consumers and more quickly advance accessibility to sustainable coffee offerings.” He said the restructuring would add staff with specialty skills to help scale Atomo’s vision.
The announcement did not detail the operating plan, identify how many jobs might be affected, or provide new staffing figures. The company’s public explanation was its own rationale, not evidence that the changes later succeeded.

Did Atomo lay people off?
Atomo declined to confirm to GeekWire whether it had laid off employees and did not provide an updated headcount. Current and former employees told the outlet that cuts had occurred the week before the announcement. That is the extent of what the January 2023 report established: the employee accounts were reported, but Atomo did not confirm them, and the number of affected workers was not disclosed.
How did Atomo’s product and sales strategy change?
2023: beanless coffee and canned cold brew
In the 2023 reporting, Atomo was presented as a beanless-coffee company using upcycled ingredients; its early consumer launch included canned cold brew. GeekWire reported company comparisons claiming the brews used 94% less water and produced 93% less carbon emissions than conventional coffee. Those are Atomo’s claims as reported in 2023, not independently validated lifecycle results in the cited coverage.

2024: espresso grounds and café customers
By April 2024, Atomo was emphasizing espresso grounds and supplying café customers, alongside a new Seattle roastery. GeekWire reported that the company had close to 40 employees and had raised just over $53 million cumulatively by then; neither figure should be read as current. The roastery was described as having capacity for 90 million cups a year, a capacity figure rather than actual production.
Atomo also said its regular espresso had 83% fewer carbon emissions and used 70% less farmland than conventional coffee. These were company comparisons reported in 2024, separate from the 2023 brew claims; the reviewed coverage does not independently validate either set of lifecycle figures. Kleitsch described the facility as a breakthrough and said the company aimed to serve espresso, drip, ready-to-drink coffee, and pods.

Atomo’s official product page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists Prebiotic Medium and Prebiotic Dark as Arabica coffee boosted with a roasted fiber blend, with Amazon links. It also describes brewing options including French press, Chemex, pour-over, and drip. This current product description is not the same as the beanless coffee discussed in the 2023 coverage. The reviewed sources do not establish whether Atomo’s 2023 beanless products remain available, its current staffing, or its present café stockists.
