Sana Biotechnology held a ribbon-cutting for its manufacturing facility in Bothell, Washington, on August 2, 2024. The site was announced as an approximately 80,000-square-foot facility for the company’s cell and gene therapy pipeline. But Sana’s March 2026 year-end update says it has suspended further expansion of internal manufacturing and expects to use contract manufacturers for its current needs. The opening plans, therefore, should not be mistaken for Sana’s current manufacturing strategy.
Where is Sana Biotechnology’s facility?
The facility is at 3555 Monte Villa Parkway in Bothell, Washington, within Alexandria Center for Advanced Technologies – Monte Villa. Sana’s June 2022 announcement described it as an approximately 80,000-square-foot site. A contemporaneous U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing specified 79,565 square feet of laboratory, office, and industrial space.
The Bothell plan replaced an earlier proposed site in Fremont, California. Sana said it had broken ground in Bothell about a year before the August 2024 ribbon-cutting. At the event, CEO Steve Harr cut the ribbon alongside Washington state Rep. Suzan DelBene, Bothell Mayor Mason Thompson, and Sana CTO Snehal Patel, according to GeekWire’s August 2, 2024 report.
What was the facility intended to make?
When Sana announced the facility in 2022, it said the site was intended to support multiple product candidates across its cell and gene therapy portfolio as programs moved toward later-stage clinical development and early commercial supply. The company described the planned facility as a good manufacturing practices (GMP) operation.

At the 2024 event, GeekWire reported that the site would house Sana’s proprietary cancer-drug program, with other programs potentially following. Those statements describe the plans reported at the time; they do not establish what the facility currently manufactures.
How Sana’s manufacturing plans changed
Sana’s March 3, 2026 year-end update says the company suspended further build-out of its internal manufacturing capabilities and expected to use contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) to meet current manufacturing needs. Sana cited available third-party capacity and a better understanding of its near-term needs.
The update also reported a $44.6 million non-cash impairment in 2025, primarily related to the Bothell manufacturing facility and certain Seattle laboratory and office space. That accounting charge is not a statement of the facility’s exact occupancy or final disposition. Sana’s report does not establish whether the Bothell site is fully occupied, subleased, or otherwise being used.
What the announced financial figures do—and don’t—show
| Figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| Approximately 80,000 square feet | Sana’s rounded description of the planned facility in its 2022 announcement. |
| 79,565 square feet | Leased laboratory, office, and industrial premises, as specified in Sana’s 2022 SEC filing. |
| More than $100 million | Sana’s 2022 estimate of savings over the following three years from the move. It was a forecast, not confirmation of savings achieved. |
| More than $500 million | Harr’s manufacturing sciences and facility-capability spending expectation, reported by GeekWire in 2024. It was an estimate, not a verified account of money ultimately spent. |
| $44.6 million | Non-cash impairment recorded in 2025 and reported by Sana in 2026, primarily related to the Bothell facility and certain Seattle space. |
The area figures refer to different descriptions: Sana rounded the planned facility to approximately 80,000 square feet, while its SEC filing gave the leased premises as 79,565 square feet. The savings and spending figures were expectations reported before the later change in strategy; they should not be read as realized financial results.
Why the timeline matters
The facility’s story is a shift from an ambitious internal manufacturing plan to a near-term strategy relying on outside capacity. In 2022, Sana presented Bothell as infrastructure for a broad pipeline. In 2024, the company’s opening plans included its proprietary cancer program and the possibility of additional programs. By March 2026, Sana said it had halted further internal build-out and would use CDMOs for current needs. The available company update does not resolve the facility’s precise current use or disposition.
