Re:

Which Airlines Have the Most Generous Checked Baggage Allowances?

Qatar Airways, Qantas and other airlines publish generous checked-bag allowances, but the best deal depends on route, fare, cabin and ticket details.

There is no single airline with the most generous checked-bag allowance for every traveler. The amount you can check for free depends on your route, fare, cabin, travel date, loyalty status, and sometimes the carrier operating a connecting flight. Among the high-end published examples, Qatar Airways First Elite offers up to 50 kg on weight-concept routes, while Qantas First allows up to 50 kg on many international routes or three bags of up to 32 kg each on routes to and from the Americas. Those are premium-cabin examples, not a universal ranking or typical economy allowance.

Which airlines publish high checked-baggage allowances?

The figures below are examples from current official airline policy pages accessed in 2026. They describe specific routes, cabins, or fare products; they are not a standardized ranking of all airlines.

Airline Published example What changes the allowance
Qatar Airways On weight-concept routes, First Elite lists 50 kg total and Business fares list 40 kg. On flights to or from Africa or the Americas, First Elite lists two pieces of up to 32 kg each. Route determines whether weight or piece rules apply, and exceptions exist. Check the booking confirmation. Qatar Airways baggage allowance
Qantas International First allows three pieces of up to 32 kg each for North and South America routes, or up to 50 kg total for the rest of the world. No individual bag may exceed 32 kg. These are First Class examples; route and partner-carrier rules can differ. Qantas checked baggage
Emirates On weight-concept routes, Economy examples range from 20 kg to 35 kg depending on fare. No individual bag may exceed 32 kg. Some routes use piece rules instead, and fare conditions apply. Emirates checked baggage
ANA For most international flights, First Class allows three bags, with a 32 kg limit per bag and a 158 cm combined-dimension limit. Economy allowance varies from zero to two bags by fare. Fare and partner-carrier rules can change the applicable allowance. ANA baggage information
Thai Airways For routes moved to the piece concept for travel commencing on or after March 2, 2026, premium cabins may allow 32 kg per bag and Premium Economy/Economy 23 kg per bag. The cited maximum combined dimension is 158 cm. Free bag count depends on cabin and route. Thai Airways baggage allowance
Lufthansa Published basic free allowances range from one bag at 23 kg to three bags at 32 kg, depending on booked class and status. The Passenger Receipt or ticket specifies the applicable allowance. Lufthansa baggage

These examples show why a headline like “the most generous airline” can mislead: the largest total weight may belong to a premium fare, while a different route may use a per-piece allowance. Emirates describes its allowance as “one of the most generous baggage allowances in the world”; that is the airline’s own promotional claim, not an independent comparison.

Weight allowance and bag count are different

Under a weight concept, the rule sets a total weight allowance that may be divided among bags, subject to any individual-bag limit. Under a piece concept, the rule sets both a number of bags and a maximum weight for each. Qatar Airways and Emirates use both systems depending on route. A total allowance of 40 kg, for example, does not necessarily mean you can put 40 kg in one suitcase: both airlines list a 32 kg individual-bag maximum in the cited rules.

Why your ticket can differ from a general policy page

  • Route and direction: Some airlines switch between weight and piece concepts by route. Qatar Airways notes route exceptions, and Emirates limits piece rules to specified route groups.
  • Fare family and cabin: Economy allowances can vary by fare, while First or Business examples should not be assumed to apply to an economy ticket.
  • Status and ticket details: Loyalty benefits, ticket issue date, and the exact fare may affect the included allowance or fees. American Airlines’ fee page, for example, varies fees by region, fare, and ticket issue date. American Airlines checked-bag fees
  • Codeshares and connections: A partner airline’s baggage rules may apply or differ. ANA, Qantas, and Thai Airways flag partner or codeshare distinctions; Qatar Airways and Lufthansa direct customers to the booking or ticket details.

How to compare airlines before you book

  1. Set the itinerary: Compare the same origin, destination, travel direction, and travel date for each airline. Note the ticket issue date if fee rules may depend on it.
  2. Choose the exact fare and cabin: Compare the economy fare family you would actually buy, or compare the same premium cabin across carriers.
  3. Read the allowance in the booking details: Check the booking confirmation or manage-booking page rather than relying only on a general policy headline.
  4. Record the full rule: Note whether it is a weight or piece concept, the free bag count, total kilograms, per-bag limit, and maximum combined dimensions.
  5. Check extras and exceptions: Add any status benefit, partner-carrier condition, next-bag fee, or excess-weight charge to the comparison. Airline policies and fees can change.

A portable digital luggage scale can help you check each packed bag against its per-piece limit. It does not determine your allowance or guarantee that no fee will apply; the airline’s rule and your ticket do that.
