First, clarify what “without Kindle” means
The phrase can describe two different goals:
- No Kindle device required: You may still publish an ebook through KDP. Amazon describes its ebooks as Kindle Store titles and refers to reading them with Kindle apps and devices. Buyers do not necessarily need to own a Kindle e-reader. Amazon KDP Amazon publishing guidance
- No Kindle publishing or store listing: The reviewed Amazon sources do not show a general self-service option for creators to upload and sell arbitrary downloadable files directly to customers. KDP is Amazon’s documented self-service route for digital books. Amazon KDP KDP help
Which Amazon route fits your product?

Does KDP force you to sell only on Amazon?
Not by default, according to Amazon’s help information. The exclusivity restriction identified in the reviewed KDP guidance applies when an ebook is enrolled in KDP Select; do not treat it as a condition of every KDP ebook. Check the current Select terms before enrolling, because program rules can change. KDP Select help
What about PDFs, templates, courses, or software?
Do not assume that a regular Amazon seller listing will let you upload a PDF, design template, course, software package, or other file and have Amazon deliver it as a download. The available evidence does not establish that capability, and a Seller Central community discussion is not authoritative policy text. If avoiding Kindle is essential, plan for a storefront outside Amazon that explicitly supports your file type and digital delivery. This is an alternative to Amazon, not a confirmed Amazon selling route.

When ACX may be relevant
ACX is worth considering only if you have audiobook rights and meet its Kindle ebook prerequisite: ACX’s help says the ebook must already be published in the Kindle store. Its materials describe audiobook production and retail availability through Amazon, Audible, and Apple Books, so it is an adjacent audiobook route—not a way to sell a standalone digital file while avoiding Kindle entirely. Choose a route based on the outcome you need
- You want readers to access your book without buying a Kindle device: Consider KDP, and explain to buyers that Kindle apps are also part of Amazon’s reading ecosystem. Confirm the current app and marketplace details for your audience. Amazon KDP Amazon publishing guidance
- You want an Amazon ebook listing and sales elsewhere too: Review KDP Select before enrolling. Amazon identifies Select enrollment—not all KDP publishing—as the exclusivity condition. KDP Select help
- You want to sell a standalone downloadable file without Kindle: The reviewed sources do not establish a general Amazon self-service route. Check current official seller policy for the exact category; otherwise use a platform that explicitly provides digital downloads.
- You want to sell an audiobook: Check ACX eligibility, including its Kindle ebook prerequisite, before starting. ACX eligibility help
