For a specialist marketplace, consider HipStamp; for managed online consignment, eligible American Philatelic Society members can use APS StampStore. eBay offers a broad general marketplace, while a local dealer may suit sellers who value an in-person transaction. Compare the likely net proceeds, effort, and control—not a catalog value or a platform’s asking prices.
Choose a selling route based on effort, reach, and control
No single venue is best for every collection. Fees, listing work, buyer reach, and how you handle unsold material differ by route. The sources reviewed do not establish typical returns or time to sale, so treat those as unknowns rather than promises.

Estimate what the stamps may actually sell for
A catalog value is not a guaranteed cash offer or realized selling price. Compare completed sales or platform estimates for the same country, catalog number, condition, format, and grade. An unsold asking price is not evidence of a sale.
Use APS pricing guidance only for its intended context
APS advises StampStore sellers to price very fine stamps competitively at 40%–60% of catalog value unless a certificate confirms grading; it says its more successful sellers price below the 50% level. This is venue-specific guidance, not a universal market rule or valuation of your stamp. Account for condition
Condition can materially affect value. APS identifies thins, creases, pulled perforations, tears, rounded corners, scuffs, and missing gum on mint stamps as faults that should be disclosed and can reduce asking prices considerably. Describe visible damage plainly rather than assuming a buyer will overlook it.
Treat estimates as estimates
HipStamp says its HipValues feature estimates average current online selling prices partly from historical sales. Estimates are not available for every item and are provided without warranty, so use them as a reference—not as a cash offer. HipStamp HipValues

Prepare and list stamps accurately
- Group and identify the material. Sort stamps into sensible lots and record country, catalog number when known, format, and condition. Avoid presenting an uncertain identification as fact.
- Check comparable sales. Compare like with like, especially grade and faults. Do not use catalog value or an unsold listing as proof of what buyers will pay.
- Photograph clearly. Use well-lit images that show the stamp and any faults; make the listing description consistent with what the images show.
- Choose a venue and calculate net proceeds. Include platform charges, subscription costs where applicable, shipping, and the labor of listing and fulfillment. Check the platform’s current rules and fees before committing.
- Keep records and fulfill carefully. Track what you list, the price, fees, shipping, and whether an item sold or was returned.

How APS StampStore consignment works
StampStore is the most hands-off of the named online routes, but it is not a quick cash sale by definition: the seller sends in material, APS manages the listing and fulfillment, and payment follows the buyer’s return period.

Prepare eligible items

Understand payment and unsold returns
APS terms provide a 30-day buyer return period. Proceeds are sent after that period; sold items show as sold/payment pending for 37 days. Unsold returns incur a charge equal to 1% of the total sale-price value, plus postage and handling. These are StampStore-specific terms and should be checked for updates before sending material. Mail the consignment securely
Mount items so they remain visible for scanning and package them securely. APS recommends tracked and insured mailing for valuable consignments. Keep a record of what you sent and its condition.
