Sending ACH Payments in Canada: A Business Guide to EFT, Interac and U.S. ACH

Canadian domestic business transfers usually use EFT/AFT, while U.S. ACH requires separate confirmation of payment direction, account eligibility, currency, costs and timing.

Canadian businesses generally send domestic bank-to-bank payments as electronic funds transfers (EFTs), often through Automated Funds Transfer (AFT)—not through a Canadian system called “ACH.” If you need to pay or collect from a U.S. account, that is a separate cross-border question: confirm whether your bank or provider can originate or receive U.S. ACH for your specific account and currency.

The right route depends on where the accounts are domiciled, whether you are sending or receiving, and whether you need individual payments or batch processing. Here is how to distinguish the main options and what to check before you set one up.

What does “ACH” mean for a business in Canada?

ACH is the familiar name for the U.S. Automated Clearing House network. It does not automatically describe a domestic transfer between Canadian bank accounts. In Canada, businesses commonly use EFT terminology; recurring or batch electronic payments may be handled as AFT credits or debits through Payments Canada’s retail batch payment system.

Payments Canada’s retail batch infrastructure comprises the Automated Clearing Settlement System (ACSS) and the United States Bulk Exchange application (USBE). Payments Canada describes it as a dual-currency system for clearing and settling most paper and electronic payments drawn on Canadian- or U.S.-dollar accounts at Canadian-domiciled financial institutions. USBE is part of this Canadian infrastructure; it should not be confused with the U.S. ACH network or taken as proof that a particular Canadian account can send or receive U.S. ACH. AFT credits and debits

AFT credits are used mainly for direct deposits, such as paying funds into a recipient’s account. AFT debits include pre-authorized debits, where an authorized business collects funds from a customer’s account. These are batch payment streams, rather than instant transfers. Payments Canada’s AFT materials include customer credit and debit transfers, returns, reversals and related payment messages; those standards are for payment-system participants, not technical steps that every small business must implement. Which payment route fits your business?

Route Accounts and currency Direction and scale Timing and key consideration
Canadian EFT/AFT Canadian-domiciled accounts; Payments Canada describes clearing for Canadian- and U.S.-dollar accounts at Canadian-domiciled financial institutions. AFT credits pay recipients; AFT debits collect authorized payments. Batch workflows can suit recurring or multiple payments. Batch processing and business-day settlement; ask your institution about its cut-offs, posting times and return handling.
Interac e-Transfer for Business Canadian business banking account with the service enabled; availability and account features depend on the financial institution. Send, request or receive funds; business features include bulk payables and receivables, subject to institution and account support. Interac says most payments arrive within seconds and advertises availability around the clock; actual delivery can vary by institution and transaction.
U.S. ACH through a bank or provider Eligibility depends on the provider’s arrangement, account domicile and currency. A Canadian business should verify the exact account requirements. Confirm whether you need to originate/send ACH, receive it, or both; do not assume one direction implies the other. Provider-specific fees, cut-offs, limits, timing and returns are not established here; obtain current terms directly.

For an individual payment between Canadian businesses, Interac e-Transfer may be convenient if both sides and their institutions support the relevant features. For payroll, recurring collections or larger batch workflows, ask your financial institution about AFT/EFT capabilities. For a U.S. counterparty, specify that you mean U.S. ACH and verify the account eligibility and payment direction rather than relying on the label “EFT.”

How to arrange U.S. ACH from a Canadian business

Ask your financial institution or payment provider about the specific transaction rather than asking only whether it “supports ACH.” A provider may handle sending differently from receiving, and account eligibility can depend on the account’s country of domicile and currency. The sources here do not establish a current offer from any particular provider.

  1. State the direction. Explain whether your business needs to send/originate a payment to a U.S. account, receive a U.S. ACH payment into its account, or do both. Also say whether the payment is a credit or an authorized debit collection.
  2. Name the accounts and currency. Identify whether the payer and payee accounts are Canadian- or U.S.-domiciled and whether funds are in CAD or USD. Ask whether your exact account can originate or receive that payment type.
  3. Get operational terms in writing. Confirm transaction and batch limits, cut-off times, estimated settlement, fees, currency conversion method or FX spread, and the process for returns, reversals or recalls.
  4. Check reconciliation needs. Ask whether payment references or remittance data can travel with the payment and whether your accounting workflow can match them to invoices or customer accounts.

If the provider cannot support the required account and direction, ask what alternative it offers—such as a wire or correspondent-bank transfer—and compare its total cost, timing and handling requirements before choosing.

Questions to ask before choosing a method

  • Is this a Canadian domestic AFT/EFT, Interac e-Transfer, U.S. ACH, or a wire/correspondent transfer?
  • Does the business need to send, receive, or both—and is the payment a credit or debit?
  • Which account domicile and currency are required, and is the actual account eligible?
  • What are the processing cut-offs, settlement estimates, transaction or batch limits, fees, FX method, and return or recall process?
  • Can the payment carry a reference or remittance details that will reconcile in the business’s accounting system?

What the rules and system descriptions do—and do not—tell you

Payments Canada’s rules index includes AFT rules, including Rule F1 and ISO 20022-specific Rule F4. The current ACSS rules were updated effective July 27, 2026. These materials describe system and participant requirements; they do not establish that every Canadian business account has direct access to every payment stream or that a particular U.S. ACH service is available to it. Payments Canada: Rules & documentation

The Bank of Canada designated Interac e-Transfer a prominent payment system effective August 10, 2020. Its 2020 announcement reported 486 million transactions totaling $169 billion for Interac in fiscal year 2019; that is historical context, not a current volume figure. Bank of Canada announcement, August 10, 2020

The Bank of Canada’s August 2026 FAQ describes cross-border retail payment transactions as movements between a payer and payee in separate countries and explains that the Retail Payment Activities Act treats functions involving designated systems differently from ordinary payment-provider functions. That regulatory overview is not a determination of an individual business’s registration obligations; seek qualified advice for a specific compliance question.
