“Weeks, not months” was Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman’s timing estimate on March 23, 2026—not a scheduled markup date. The Senate Agriculture Committee later advanced the Agricultural Act of 2026, S. 5526, and the bill was placed on the Senate calendar on September 24. Boozman said he planned to negotiate with House counterparts in October and wanted both chambers to pass a bill before year-end. Those steps and goals do not mean the full Senate has passed the bill or that it has become law.
What Boozman meant by “weeks, not months”
At an agriculture policy conference on March 23, 2026, Boozman offered “Weeks, not months” as a broad signal that Senate work on a five-year Farm Bill was approaching. He did not provide a specific date for committee action. The March 24 account in Farm Policy News, published by the University of Illinois farmdoc, reported the remark while describing calendar congestion and partisan disagreements as obstacles to moving legislation.
Where the 2026 Farm Bill stands now
- Committee action: On September 16, the Senate Agriculture Committee advanced the Agricultural Act of 2026, also called Farm Bill 2.0, according to Boozman’s committee statement.
- Senate calendar: The bill, S. 5526, was reported on September 24, read twice, and placed on the Senate calendar, according to its Government Publishing Office bill record. Being placed on the calendar is a procedural step; it is not approval by the full Senate.
- House negotiations: On September 25, Boozman said he intended to negotiate with House counterparts in October and aimed to have a bill pass both chambers before year-end. This is his stated plan and target, not confirmation that negotiations or passage have occurred.
The available status information establishes committee advancement and calendar placement, but not passage by the full Senate, agreement with the House, or enactment.
What the Farm Bill covers
The Farm Bill is a recurring package of federal agriculture, nutrition, conservation, and forestry policy. The Senate Agriculture Committee describes it as legislation Congress passes every five years. Its scope helps explain why moving a bill involves both policy disagreements and coordination between the Senate and House.

Issues raised in the March debate
The March account identified several priorities being discussed at that time. They should not be treated as a definitive description of the later committee bill or as provisions already enacted.
- Farm economics and trade: Ranking member Amy Klobuchar highlighted low commodity prices, high input costs, and trade uncertainty.
- Conservation and disaster assistance: Klobuchar also raised conservation and disaster aid for specialty crops.
- SNAP cost-sharing: The report noted debate over cost-sharing penalties related to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- Domestic demand and cotton: Boozman emphasized domestic demand, including E15 and the Buying American Cotton Act.
E15 was not presented as a settled Farm Bill provision. In the March report, Boozman said he would be willing to include authorization for year-round E15 sales if the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee agreed.

The next meaningful milestones are whether Boozman’s planned House negotiations produce an agreement, whether the Senate schedules full-floor consideration, and whether both chambers pass matching legislation. Until those steps occur, S. 5526 remains a bill that has advanced through committee and been placed on the Senate calendar—not a law.
