The historic gain was a move in that specific session—not a current market update.
What happened on April 7, 2020?
In a report published that day, Scroll Staff described the session’s absolute point gains as the biggest single-day gains recorded by Indian share markets at the time. The BSE Sensex closed at 30,067.21, up 2,476.26 points, or 9%, from its previous close of 27,590.95. The Nifty 50 closed at 8,792.20, gaining nearly 9%. Scroll’s April 7, 2020 report is the source for these figures.
How the indexes moved during the session
The closing values were not the session’s highs or lows. Scroll reported the Sensex opened at 28,898.36, reached an intraday high of 30,157, and fell to a low of 28,602.31 before closing. The Nifty 50 reached 8,819.40 during the day before ending at 8,792.20.
IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank were named as the top gainers on both indexes. Scroll reported that every stock on both indices finished in positive territory.

Why did the market rise?
Scroll cited signs that coronavirus spread was slowing in key hotspots and early government plans to gradually relax restrictions as positive cues for investors. The report provides contemporaneous context, but it does not establish that either factor caused the rally or quantify its influence.
The report also said the rupee settled at 75.63 per US dollar, compared with its previous close of 76.13. That is a separate market figure from the stock-index gains, not an explanation for them.

What “biggest gain” means here
The headline’s record claim refers to the Sensex’s absolute point increase, as characterized by Scroll in its April 7, 2020 report. The index also rose 9% that day. Points and percentages describe different things: the point gain is the difference between the closing level and the previous close, while the percentage expresses that change relative to the previous close.
The Nifty 50 is a separate index. Its reported closing level was 8,792.20—not its intraday high of 8,819.40. These historical figures describe the April 7, 2020 session only; they should not be read as present-day index levels.
