That was a forecast—not a verified final inventory, and not information about seed availability or prices today. Their practical advice was to order early if access to a preferred hybrid, variety, trait package, or seed treatment mattered.
What “steady” meant in the 2021 outlook
Gil Gullickson’s October 5, 2021, report in Successful Farming described company expectations for the following season. It did not cite an independently measured industry-wide inventory figure. The outlook was qualitative and attributed to company representatives, so it should not be read as proof that every product, trait, or regional choice would be available—or that the projected supply outcome ultimately occurred.
Jim Hedges, then WinField United’s vice president of seed marketing, said the company felt good about its planned 2022 supply. The report noted that most of WinField United’s production was irrigated and largely domestic. Those details explain the company’s confidence; they are not a measure of national supply.
Daniel Olivier, Bayer’s North America commercial seed field production lead, described planting products in multiple areas to spread production risk and managing for weather and shifts in supply or demand. The broader point was that seed supply depended on production planning and biological quality, not simply on a warehouse count.

Why an adequate overall supply did not guarantee every choice
Seed is produced and tested ahead of planting
Ryan White, Syngenta’s head of North America seed production and supply chain, said product managers had selected the origins of seed farmers would choose in fall roughly two years earlier. Production and quality testing take time, and the company’s goal was to have seed ready for spring planting. That lead time helps explain why an overall confident forecast could coexist with advice to make selections early.
Product lines change
Seed companies update portfolios as they introduce products with traits they expect farmers to want. The 2021 report named XtendFlex and Enlist E3 as examples of trait packages and noted that familiar varieties may be replaced. A product’s prior availability therefore did not guarantee that it would remain in a company’s lineup for 2022.

For a specific field, compare the fit of the hybrid or variety, genetics, traits, and seed treatment rather than choosing on supply or a trait label alone. The report advised farmers to discuss field fit with an agronomist or seed representative; it did not provide replicated yield trials or a neutral product comparison.
Why early ordering was recommended
Early orders were presented as a way to improve access to preferred products and, in some cases, receive a discount. Ryan Siefken, Hoegemeyer Hybrids’ product team leader and corn lead, said the company directed many discount dollars toward securing early orders. That was a description of a typical practice in 2021, not a promise of discounts for another supplier or season.

- Identify the fields and product characteristics that matter before choosing a seed product.
- Ask the supplier which preferred hybrids, varieties, traits, and treatments are available for the season in question.
- Check the order deadline, discount terms, and any conditions directly with that supplier; the 2021 report does not establish current pricing or terms.
- Ask whether a familiar product is being phased out and what alternatives are suitable for the field.
Delivery was a risk, not a reported failure
Hedges said truck demand and driver availability were concerns, but he did not expect delivery problems based on the prior fourth-quarter shipping experience he described. His “around 30%” figure referred specifically to the share of WinField United’s corn normally shipped in the fourth quarter. It was not a national statistic, and the report did not establish that all seed companies faced the same shipping pattern or outcome.
What the article’s technology forecasts do—and do not—tell you
The report described Bayer’s plans at the time for a five-way herbicide-tolerant soybean stack in 2026–2027 and an additional Group 14 trait by 2030. These were forecasts made in 2021, not confirmation that the products were later launched or that the plans remain current. They should not be used as present-day product specifications or recommendations without current verification.

What a farmer could reasonably take from the forecast
The useful takeaway was to plan early for product choice, while treating the broad supply outlook as a company expectation rather than a guarantee. For decisions about a later season, check current availability, prices, product specifications, and order terms with the relevant seed supplier or local dealer, then assess field fit with an agronomist. The 2021 report cannot answer those current questions.
