Al Pacino’s exact pay for playing Tony Montana in the 1983 film Scarface has not been publicly established in the sources reviewed. That is a different question from Pacino’s overall net worth: no trustworthy, independently verified current figure for his total wealth is established here, either. Film budgets, ticket sales and video sales are not evidence of an actor’s personal earnings.
What is Al Pacino’s Scarface salary?
It is not publicly known from the available reporting. A 2026 Parade article says Pacino’s exact compensation for Scarface has not been publicly revealed. The sources reviewed do not establish his salary, any profit participation, or residual payments from the film. No reliable amount should be presented as fact.
Pacino played Tony Montana in the 1983 film, directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone, according to the AFI Catalog. The film’s financial performance does not disclose the terms of his contract.
Is Pacino’s net worth the same as his Scarface earnings?
No. A net-worth figure estimates a person’s assets minus liabilities at a particular point in time; a salary or participation payment is compensation under a specific contract. A celebrity-net-worth figure is a third-party estimate, not a verified financial statement, and it cannot show how much an actor earned from one role. The sources reviewed do not establish a trustworthy, independently verified current net worth for Pacino.

Coverage of Pacino’s memoir, Sonny Boy, discusses his financial experiences but does not provide a verified present-day net worth or Scarface contract amount. See The Guardian’s 2024 memoir coverage.
Why the film’s budget and sales do not answer the question
Production costs and sales belong to the film’s financial history, not automatically to an individual actor. The published budget figures for Scarface also differ by source:
| Reported figure | Source and context |
|---|---|
| About $13 million initially, rising to $37 million by the end of production | Variety reporting reproduced in a 2023 SEC filing |
| $23.5 million | A contemporary Los Angeles Times report referenced by the AFI Catalog |
These are conflicting reported production-cost figures, not estimates of Pacino’s pay. Neither establishes what his contract provided.
The same Variety reporting reproduced in the SEC filing describes the film’s early home-video sales. It says executives called Scarface the summer’s highest-selling title in 1984, with cassettes priced at $79.95; by June 22, 1984, 100,000 cassettes had reportedly sold, representing an estimated $5 million in sales. Those are historical video-market figures—not Pacino’s income, and not proof that he received a share.

A separate territorial record should not be mistaken for worldwide performance: the ICAA database lists Spain gross of €608,731.34 and 401,439 admissions for its recorded territory. It does not establish a global gross or Pacino’s compensation.
