It works in aircraft and helicopter propulsion, aircraft equipment and interiors, defense, and space. Safran reported €31.329 billion in adjusted revenue for 2025; the claim that it is the world’s second-largest aircraft equipment manufacturer is not established by the company sources cited here.
1. What does Safran do?
Safran describes itself as an international high-technology group active in aviation, defense, and space. Its aviation business covers propulsion, equipment, and aircraft interiors. Its products and systems include civil and military aircraft engines, helicopter engines, missile propulsion systems, landing gear, nacelles, evacuation slides, electrical systems and wiring, cabin systems, seats, and in-flight entertainment.
That breadth matters when interpreting descriptions such as “aircraft equipment manufacturer”: Safran is not limited to equipment installed on aircraft. It also makes engines and provides services, while participating in defense and space activities. Safran’s company profile outlines its markets.
2. How big is Safran?
Safran reported €31,329 million in adjusted revenue for FY2025, up 14.7% year over year, and €31,189 million in consolidated revenue. These are distinct measures published in its February 13, 2026 results release; they should not be combined or treated as interchangeable. The company also reported adjusted recurring operating income of €5,197 million, equal to 16.6% of adjusted sales, and free cash flow of €3,921 million. These are company-reported figures, not independent estimates. Safran’s FY2025 results release provides the definitions and full results.

Safran’s company profile gives rounded 2025 figures of €31.3 billion in revenue and more than 110,000 employees. Those rounded profile figures and the more precise financial results are different presentations of company-reported scale.
3. What are Safran’s main businesses?
Safran reports three principal operating segments. The table uses adjusted FY2025 revenue, so the segment figures should be read on that basis rather than added to the separate consolidated-revenue figure.

| Segment | FY2025 adjusted revenue | Services share of segment adjusted revenue | Examples of activity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Propulsion | €15,668 million | 64.6% | Aircraft and helicopter engines, missile propulsion, and related services |
| Equipment & Defense | €12,302 million | 39.1% | Landing gear, nacelles, evacuation systems, electrical systems and wiring, and defense equipment |
| Aircraft Interiors | €3,349 million | 36.8% | Cabin systems, seats, and in-flight entertainment |
Revenue and services-mix figures are from Safran’s FY2025 results release. Safran notes that retrofit is included in original equipment in the Aircraft Interiors split, so the services share should be interpreted with that accounting treatment in mind. The results release contains the segment breakdown.
4. Safran sells both equipment and after-sales services
A manufacturer’s business is not measured only by new equipment delivered to aircraft makers. Safran also earns revenue from services supporting products already in use. In FY2025, services accounted for 64.6% of adjusted Propulsion revenue, compared with 39.1% for Equipment & Defense and 36.8% for Aircraft Interiors. The differences show why the group’s businesses should not be treated as identical: their reported mix between services and original equipment varies substantially.

5. Some of Safran’s best-known engines are made through a joint venture
Safran’s CFM56 and LEAP engines are developed with GE Aerospace through CFM International, a 50/50 joint venture formed in the 1970s and renewed through 2050, according to Safran’s FY2025 investor presentation. Safran therefore is an engine manufacturer, but these two engine families are a partnership rather than products developed by Safran alone. The presentation also identifies Safran’s 50% stake in ArianeGroup, which is connected to the group’s space activities. Safran’s investor materials provide the group presentation and related financial information.
Is Safran really the world’s second-largest aircraft equipment manufacturer?
The available official company profile, FY2025 results, and investor presentation establish Safran’s business areas and reported scale, but they do not substantiate a second-place industry ranking. The phrase is also ambiguous without a defined peer group and measurement basis: it could refer to total company revenue, a particular product category, or another measure. Treat “world’s second-largest aircraft equipment manufacturer” as an unverified description unless it is supported by a dated independent ranking that specifies what is being compared.
