Jahmy Hindman is John Deere’s Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. In a January 2021 Successful Farming interview, he described the job as finding technology that solves customer problems and helping bring it across Deere’s product range. His view of farm technology was broader than a tractor or an app: it connected equipment, software, data and people who help farmers use them.

Who is Jahmy Hindman?

Hindman grew up on a hobby farm near Maxwell, Iowa, where he raised cattle and did farm work such as growing hay and mending fences. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University, followed by a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan. His doctoral work focused on artificial neural networks in heavy-equipment applications, according to Laurie Bedord’s Successful Farming profile published January 13, 2021.

He joined Deere in 1996 as a test engineer working on backhoes and crawlers. The profile reports that he became the company’s first chief technology officer in July 2020. Deere’s current U.S. leadership page lists him as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer; Deere’s 2024 annual report also records that title and notes earlier engineering leadership roles.

What does Deere’s CTO do?

In the 2021 interview, Hindman described his remit as two related tasks: identify technology that addresses customer problems and supports profitability and sustainability, then accelerate its adoption across Deere’s product portfolio. “My role has two different dimensions to it,” he said.

He said Deere had traditionally organized development around individual product groups. The CTO role, in his view, created an opportunity to consider equipment and data needs across a grower’s full production cycle rather than treating each machine as an isolated product.

How does Deere use technology on farms?

Hindman described an end-to-end “tech stack,” not one standalone product. It includes equipment hardware, embedded software, connectivity, data platforms and applications. The intended result is that machines can collect and share information, while digital tools help farmers interpret it and decide what to do across an operation.

His farm-of-the-future vision built on existing farms: connected machines communicating with each other and cloud services, data informing recommendations across the operation, and automation increasing gradually. He anticipated that equipment might eventually operate without a person in the seat, but characterized that transition as one that would take time—not as a description of every farm today.

What can make farm technology difficult to adopt?

Ease of use and learning

Hindman identified user understanding as one adoption challenge. Technology has to be intuitive enough for people to use effectively, and farmers may need help learning unfamiliar features. He described dealerships as a key channel for that education and support, particularly when growers need answers during time-sensitive work. “The dealership is a critical informational and relational element,” he said.

Long-lived equipment and faster-changing technology

Hindman said tractors and combines can remain in use for “20 to 30 years or longer,” while technology changes more quickly. That figure is his observation in the 2021 interview, not a universal lifespan statistic. His proposed response was equipment designed to accommodate future innovations, so technology can keep advancing without assuming the underlying machine will be replaced at the same pace.

Connectivity in rural areas

For connected services to work, machine data needs a route to cloud systems. Hindman argued for better bandwidth in more places, making rural connectivity part of the technology challenge rather than a separate convenience.

In testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry on November 14, 2023, Hindman said Deere had connected over 650,000 machines worldwide using terrestrial cellular networks. That is a Deere figure he gave in 2023, not a current count or an industry-wide total.

What has Hindman said about farmers’ data?

In the same 2023 testimony, Hindman stated: “A common concern regarding farmers’ data is ownership, and we are unequivocal on this matter: John Deere customers retain control over their data, including how it is collected, stored, processed, and shared.” This is Deere’s stated position as expressed by its SVP and CTO; it should not be read as an independent legal determination about data rights.

How does Deere decide whether to build, partner or acquire technology?

Hindman said the right route depends on the technology. Deere can develop a capability internally, partner with another organization, or acquire a company. He cited Blue River as an acquisition that helped Deere enter a capability area faster than internal development would have allowed. He did not present one route as best in every case; the choice turns on how successfully and quickly a particular technology can reach the market.

What did Hindman say keeps him awake at night?

Asked that question in the 2021 interview, he answered: “Not going fast enough.” In context, the remark reflects his concern with the pace of developing and spreading technology that can address customer needs.
