Pakistan’s new banknotes were not confirmed as issued in 2025 by the cited official material. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) began work on a redesigned series in January 2024 and said it intended to complete the process within two years, but it described two to three years as the general launch timeframe. A January 2026 report described further government deliberation—not notes entering circulation.
What is confirmed about Pakistan’s new currency notes?
SBP announced on January 30, 2024, that it had initiated a new banknote series covering all existing denominations. It said central banks commonly introduce a new series every 15 to 20 years and that launching one generally takes two to three years. SBP separately said it intended to complete the process within the next two years; that was an intention, not a guaranteed 2025 circulation date. SBP’s January 2024 announcement
As of the milestones described in the official and government-broadcaster sources cited here, final designs, a release date, and circulation of the new notes have not been confirmed. Check for a later SBP issuance notice before relying on any claim that the notes are available.
What happened after the 2025 expectation?
- January 30, 2024: SBP announced the new-series process and its intention to complete it within two years. SBP announcement
- September 5 and 12, 2024: SBP announced the results of a public art competition, then clarified that its winning entries were not shortlisted banknote designs. International design firms were to develop proposed printable designs; the SBP Board and Federal Government would need to approve designs before printing began. SBP clarification
- March 2024 procurement document: SBP described a planned series using cotton substrate, upgraded security features, and advanced printing techniques and materials. The document did not set out a final security-feature list. SBP procurement document
- January 14, 2026: Radio Pakistan reported that the Federal Cabinet had formed a committee to deliberate on designs. It named Rs 100, Rs 500, Rs 1,000, and Rs 5,000 as proposed denominations and mentioned improved security threads. The report did not say the designs were approved, printing had begun, or the notes were circulating. Radio Pakistan report
Which denominations will get new notes?
SBP’s January 2024 announcement said the new series would cover all existing denominations. The four denominations in the January 2026 Radio Pakistan report—Rs 100, Rs 500, Rs 1,000, and Rs 5,000—were described as proposed, not as a final approved list. The cited sources do not establish the final designs or confirm whether every denomination will be issued at the same time.

What does “enhanced security” mean for the planned series?
SBP’s procurement document points to a planned cotton-substrate series with upgraded security features and advanced printing techniques and materials. It does not confirm the specific features of any finished note. In particular, the reported reference to improved security threads is not a complete official feature specification. Do not assume that a particular watermark, ink, thread, UV response, or detector compatibility has been confirmed for the forthcoming series.
Will current Pakistani rupee notes remain valid?
Yes. SBP said the existing series would remain in circulation after the new series is issued. If old notes are later withdrawn, SBP said the process would be gradual and phased, after enough new notes are in circulation. The current series began in 2005, with denominations introduced over time, according to SBP’s banknote information. There is no basis in the cited announcement for exchanging current notes in advance.

How can you check whether a Pakistani banknote is genuine?
Use the security guidance for the specific note you have, rather than assuming forthcoming notes will use the same checks. For example, SBP’s guidance for the existing Rs 50 note describes a security thread that fluoresces yellow under ultraviolet light, as well as a watermark and other checks. That is guidance for that existing note, not evidence that the new series will share its features. SBP’s banknote guidance
SBP’s “Rupay ko Pehchano” initiative provides public-awareness videos and a smartphone application to help people recognize genuine circulating notes. Treat it as a resource for the notes covered by its guidance; the cited material does not establish that the app has been updated for, or can authenticate, a new series.
