How the SEC Expands Digital Access to Corporate Data

The SEC’s public APIs retrieve company submission histories and structured XBRL data. EDGAR Next is a separate system for filer accounts and filing access.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) offers public APIs for retrieving company filing data, while its separate EDGAR Next system governs how filers manage accounts and submit filings. If you want to look up or analyze public-company disclosures, use the SEC’s filing search, APIs, or bulk data. EDGAR Next is mainly relevant to companies and filing agents—not a new public-data portal.

What “digital access” means for company data

The title’s “SECP” appears to refer to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC. The SEC has two distinct digital-access stories that are easy to confuse:

  • Public disclosure retrieval: SEC APIs and bulk files let people and services retrieve company submission histories and structured financial-statement data.
  • Filer account access: EDGAR Next changes how electronic filers authorize people to manage filing accounts and interact with EDGAR.

The public-data APIs were announced in 2021; they are not a new 2026 launch. EDGAR Next is a separate, later account-management framework.

How to retrieve public-company disclosures

Use filing search for individual documents

If you need to find and read a specific filing, use the SEC’s EDGAR filing search. This is the practical route for locating an individual disclosure, such as an annual report or a current report.

Use public APIs or bulk files for structured data

The SEC announced free public APIs on August 19, 2021. They provide filer submission history and XBRL data from financial statements. The SEC listed annual and quarterly reports and Forms 8-K, 20-F, 40-F, and 6-K among the disclosure types covered. The SEC said API data are updated as submissions become public during the day, and that an all-data bulk ZIP is republished nightly. See the SEC’s announcement of the public disclosure APIs.

These options suit recurring retrieval, structured analysis, or software workflows better than opening filings one by one. The SEC materials establish what data are offered, but do not provide a head-to-head comparison of speed, completeness, or ease of use. Check current SEC documentation for endpoint details and usage policies before building an integration.

What EDGAR Next changes for companies and filing agents

EDGAR Next is about filer access and account management, not public access to company disclosures. Under the SEC’s final rule, electronic filers must authorize and maintain designated account administrators. Those administrators need individual account credentials under the EDGAR Filer Manual. The rule also provides optional APIs for machine-to-machine interaction with EDGAR; those APIs do not replace the account-administrator requirements. The SEC’s final rule explains the framework, and its 2026 Open Data Plan describes the optional APIs as a secure, efficient way to automate interactions with EDGAR.

For a filer, the choice between dashboard-based workflows and optional machine-to-machine APIs depends on who is authorized to act, how credentials are managed, and whether automation is needed. The SEC does not establish that using an API removes the need to maintain designated administrators.

EDGAR Next dates and current access problems

The SEC issued the final rule on September 27, 2024. It took effect March 24, 2025, and general compliance was required by September 15, 2025. The earlier transition guidance advised filers to enroll by September 12, 2025, to avoid an interruption in filing; enrollment remained open through December 19, 2025. Those transition dates have passed.

If you are a prospective filer or have lost access, do not rely on the old enrollment window. The SEC’s EDGAR Next answers page directs prospective filers and filers who have lost access to apply through Form ID on the dashboard. Check the SEC’s current help materials for the steps that apply to your organization.
