This recruitment cycle is closed, not underway. The original route was SAIL’s careers page; check it for current vacancies rather than trying to apply using this expired notice: SAIL Careers.
What SAIL advertised
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) announced recruitment for Management Trainee (Technical), E-1 grade, across its plants, units and mines. The preliminary notice described the 249 openings as tentative. The detailed advertisement, dated 5 July 2024, carried recruitment identifier PER/REC/C-96/MTT/2024.
The vacancies were distributed across eight engineering disciplines and corresponding GATE papers:
| Engineering discipline | GATE paper | Tentative posts |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical | CH | 10 |
| Civil | CE | 21 |
| Computer | CS | 9 |
| Electrical | EE | 61 |
| Electronics | EC | 5 |
| Instrumentation | IN | 11 |
| Mechanical | ME | 69 |
| Metallurgy | MT | 63 |
| Total | 249 |
Mechanical had the largest listed allocation, followed by Metallurgy and Electrical. These are the historical counts in the 2024 notice, not an indication of current SAIL hiring.

Application dates and current status
The application deadline was 25 July 2024. SAIL’s notice is therefore not accepting applications for this cycle, and a GATE-2024 result cannot be used to start a new application under this expired recruitment. A dated report by Scroll also reported the deadline. The existence of an indexed notice on SAIL’s recruitment portal does not establish that applications remain open or confirm the eventual selection outcome.
GATE requirement and selection process
The notice required candidates to have appeared in GATE-2024 in the corresponding discipline: CH, CE, CS, EE, EC, IN, ME or MT. SAIL said GATE performance would be used to shortlist candidates for group discussion and personal interview. Its notice stated: “Based on their performance in GATE- 2024, the candidates will be short-listed for appearing in the Group Discussion and Personal Interview for selection as Management Trainee (Technical).”
Rank #2
The SAIL FAQ clarifies that candidates needed to qualify in the relevant GATE-2024 discipline and apply separately for the SAIL post to be considered for further selection. The GATE result alone was not an application to SAIL.
Where to verify future SAIL vacancies
For a new recruitment cycle, use the official SAIL Careers page and read the notice for that cycle. Do not rely on this historical vacancy table, application dates or GATE-2024 requirement to determine eligibility for a later opening.

What the 2024 notice does not establish here
The detailed advertisement was dated 5 July 2024, but the available information does not establish applicant-specific rules for degree marks, age, category relaxations, application fee or pay. Check the complete advertisement before relying on any of those terms. The available sources also do not verify final selection or appointment results.
