What happened with Sam Altman’s Roadster reservation?
Altman’s post described an attempt to cancel his reservation and request a refund. As quoted by TechCrunch on November 1, 2025, he wrote: “I really was excited for the car!” He added, “And I understand delays. But 7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait.”
TechCrunch reported the reservation fee as $50,000. Altman’s account included screenshots showing an unsuccessful email attempt to cancel, according to the outlet. That documents his reported effort, not the completion of a refund.
Did Altman get his $50,000 back?
Musk said he did. In a public reply quoted by TechCrunch, Musk wrote: “And you forgot to mention act 4, where this issue was fixed and you received a refund within 24 hours.” That is Musk’s account of the outcome; the cited reporting does not independently confirm a payment or provide a transaction record. The careful answer is that Musk said Altman was refunded, while the public evidence described in the report does not settle the transaction independently.

Does Altman’s cancellation mean Tesla canceled the Roadster?
No. Altman’s reservation dispute is separate from Tesla’s plans for the second-generation Roadster. Tesla announced that version in November 2017, but the design and schedule were repeatedly delayed. A single customer’s attempt to withdraw from a reservation does not establish that the vehicle program has been canceled.
What is the Roadster’s latest announced schedule?
As of October 8, 2026, Tesla had moved its planned reveal from October 1 to October 15, 2026, in Waco, Texas. The date remained upcoming and could change. Tesla cited severe weather and the outdoor format; its statement, quoted by TechCrunch on September 28, 2026, said it had made the decision because “this event can only be held outdoors.”

The reveal is not the same as production or customer delivery. TechCrunch reported that production was expected to follow the reveal by at least a year. That is a reported expectation, not a confirmed production start or delivery date.
