As of October 8, 2026, Tennessee and Iowa had reported early court rulings allowing some claims to proceed—but neither ruling establishes that Roblox is liable. A separate securities case concerns alleged investor losses, not child-protection relief.
What the government lawsuits allege
The cases do not form one nationwide lawsuit. Different government plaintiffs have brought separate actions under different legal theories. Their allegations commonly concern moderation, age verification, communications between adults and children, parental warnings, and representations about platform safety. Those are claims by plaintiffs, not facts established merely by their announcements or court filings.

The allegations and procedural descriptions above are drawn from announcements by the Texas Office of the Attorney General, Oklahoma Office of the Attorney General, County of Los Angeles, Iowa Attorney General, and Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter. The outcomes of motions to dismiss are limited: they determine whether claims may proceed at that stage, not whether the alleged conduct happened or violated the law.
What the Tennessee and Iowa rulings mean
Tennessee’s September 22, 2026 announcement is the latest procedural update among the government cases described here. Denying a motion to dismiss means the state may continue litigating the claims covered by the ruling; it does not decide whether Roblox made the alleged promises, broke them, or deceived consumers. The Tennessee announcement makes that distinction expressly.

Iowa’s May 2026 account likewise says some claims survived dismissal. The state described which categories of allegations could continue, including claims about communications, parental controls, and warnings. That account is the state’s description of the ruling, not a final court finding that Roblox acted unlawfully.
What Roblox says about its safety measures
In an August 2025 response to Louisiana’s lawsuit, Roblox described age-based communication safeguards, text-chat filters, limits on direct messaging for users under 13 unless parental settings are adjusted, a ban on direct image sharing between users, and AI and human moderation. It also said parents can use tools for content maturity, blocking and reporting, screen time, and spending limits, and described introducing selfie-video age-estimation technology.

Those are Roblox’s descriptions of its own systems, not independent assessments of how well they work. The company also said it submitted 24,522 reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2024 and characterized that as 0.12% of the 20.3 million total reports submitted to the organization. These figures were cited by Roblox in its 2025 response; they do not independently measure the prevalence of harmful conduct on Roblox or prove the effectiveness of its controls.
Why a separate securities case matters to investors
In August 2026, the Ohio Attorney General announced that the office was seeking lead-plaintiff status in a securities class action. The action concerns alleged investor losses tied to safety representations, rather than government claims seeking child-protection measures. Ohio’s announcement describes $21.5 million in combined losses for the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and State Teachers Retirement System between October 2024 and April 2026. That is an allegation reported by the attorney general, not a court-established damages award.

For a personal-finance reader, the key distinction is what each case is about: consumer-protection and child-safety suits concern alleged conduct toward users and families, while a securities action concerns alleged harm to investors. A government lawsuit or a request to lead an investor class action is not, by itself, a finding of liability or a settled estimate of what investors will recover.

The Los Angeles County announcement says that, as of late October 2025, Roblox had over 151 million daily active users and over 380 million monthly users, citing company reporting. The county also says over 40% of users were under 13, and attributes to Roblox surveys the finding that nearly 75% of U.S. children ages 9–12 played Roblox regularly. These figures appear in a plaintiff’s announcement; they are not presented there as independently assessed findings.

What parents and investors should take from the cases
- For parents, the lawsuits raise allegations about risks and safeguards; they do not provide a court-certified verdict on whether Roblox is safe for a particular child. Roblox’s stated controls can be considered alongside a family’s own supervision and settings, without treating the company’s account of those tools as proof of effectiveness.
- For investors, distinguish the Ohio securities action from the government cases. The reported losses are alleged, and the cited announcement does not establish an award or recovery.
- When evaluating new developments, identify the plaintiff, the specific claims, and whether a statement comes from a plaintiff, Roblox, or a court. An allegation, a company response, and a procedural ruling are different kinds of information.
