In March 2024, Allstora, an online bookstore co-founded by RuPaul, was reported to list Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf among its titles. The company first defended a policy of carrying all books, then CEO Eric Cervini apologized and said the cited titles would be removed. The controversy was about Allstora’s catalog and its policies—not evidence that RuPaul personally chose the book. Available reporting establishes what happened in 2024, but does not verify the store’s current operations or catalog.

What was reported about Allstora’s catalog?

Users drew attention to controversial titles listed by Allstora in early March 2024, including Mein Kampf. Contemporary coverage described the bookstore as a marketplace co-founded by RuPaul, Eric Cervini, and Adam Powell. The reporting concerns books listed on the platform; it does not establish that RuPaul selected or endorsed any particular title. The Advocate’s March 5, 2024, report and reality blurred’s coverage, updated March 15, 2024 documented the listing and ensuing response.

Why did Allstora initially say it would sell all books?

Allstora’s reported FAQ framed broad access as a way for readers to study and respond to harmful ideologies. It stated: “At Allstora, we believe that the censorship of any book, perspective, or story is incompatible with the survival of democracy.” The company also described a community flagging process and said proceeds from flagged books would support diverse literature and marginalized communities through the Rainbow Book Bus. Those were the company’s stated policy and plan; the contemporary reports do not establish donation totals or independently document how the plan was carried out.

What changed after the criticism?

On March 9, 2024, CEO Eric Cervini apologized and announced a reversal. Follow-up coverage reported that the cited titles would no longer be available and that a flagging option would remain for other books. In explaining the decision, Cervini drew a distinction between a library and a bookstore platform:

“I wasn’t, in fact, building a library: free, accessible to all, and funded by a government or university, where the principle of free speech is paramount. Rather, I was building a platform to champion underserved authors and create community around their stories.”

He also wrote, “I’m devastated that I’ve caused Ru’s name to be even loosely associated with hate, and I take full responsibility for the decision to include these books.” The apology and reversal were attributed to Cervini, not to a verified personal selection by RuPaul. LGBTQ Nation reported on the apology on March 11, 2024.

Why did the library-versus-bookstore distinction matter?

The dispute exposed a tension between two different approaches. A library may aim to make a broad range of viewpoints available for study; a curated bookstore can choose what it sells in keeping with its purpose and community commitments. Allstora initially emphasized an open catalog, with flagging and a proposed donation as safeguards. Cervini’s reversal said that this model did not fit the platform’s stated aim of championing underserved authors and creating community around their stories. The reporting describes the policy change, not a verified financial outcome from any sale or donation.

Is Allstora still selling Mein Kampf?

The available reporting establishes that Mein Kampf was reported in Allstora’s catalog in March 2024 and that the company later said the cited titles would be removed. It does not verify whether Allstora is still operating or whether the book is listed there now. A current availability claim would require checking the store directly; the 2024 coverage alone cannot establish it.
