Roy E. Disney’s exact net worth when he died in 2009 is not confirmed by the sources reviewed. Contemporary estimates varied: the Los Angeles Times reported $600 million, while The Guardian said Forbes had estimated his fortune at $1.3 billion in 2007. Neither figure is a verified accounting of his estate.

What was Roy E. Disney’s net worth when he died?

There is no established, verified total for Roy E. Disney’s estate in the cited coverage. The published numbers are estimates from different sources and dates, and the available reporting does not show whether they used the same asset scope, valuation date, or assumptions about liabilities and estate arrangements.

Figure Source and date What it represents
$600 million Los Angeles Times, December 17, 2009 A contemporary estimate of his wealth in the obituary; not a published estate accounting.
$1.3 billion The Guardian, December 16, 2009, reporting Forbes’ 2007 estimate A fortune estimate associated with a 2007 Forbes ranking, in which he was listed as the world’s 754th-richest person; not a confirmed value at death.
16 million Walt Disney Company shares, around 1% Forbes, December 16, 2009 A reported stockholding at the time of his death, not the total value of his estate.

Because these figures describe different kinds of information, they should not be combined into one definitive net-worth number. The share count provides context about one reported asset, but it does not establish the value of all his assets or account for liabilities.

Why the estimates differ—and what they can establish

The $600 million figure was reported by the Los Angeles Times in its December 17, 2009 obituary. The higher $1.3 billion figure appears in The Guardian’s December 16 obituary as Forbes’ estimate from 2007. That distinction matters: the latter is an earlier ranking estimate, not a valuation made specifically on the date of Disney’s death.

The sources do not provide a probate inventory or reconciled estate valuation that would explain the gap. They also do not establish whether either estimate counted assets, debts, trusts, or other estate arrangements in the same way. The defensible conclusion is that published estimates differed substantially and the exact estate value remains unconfirmed by this reporting.

How his career and investments relate to his wealth

Disney’s financial profile reflected a long career in entertainment as well as investment activity. The Television Academy biography says he began in entertainment as an assistant film editor on Dragnet in 1952 and formed Shamrock Holdings with Stanley Gold in 1978. The Academy describes Shamrock as an investment company.

He was also a longtime Disney executive and film producer. The Walt Disney Company’s December 16, 2009 announcement identifies him as executive producer of Fantasia/2000 and associates him with Destino. This career context helps explain why his wealth was discussed in connection with both the Disney company and private investment activity, but it is not enough to calculate the value of his complete holdings or estate.
