The fee was reported in April 2025 as expected to begin in May 2025. Rogers later delayed its 3G retirement, and the Canadian Telecommunications Association now lists Rogers, including Fido, as having begun retiring 3G on August 7, 2025. This is a historical fee notice, not a new charge starting in November 2026.
Who the reported $3 monthly fee applied to
MobileSyrup reported on April 7, 2025, that Rogers and Fido planned to charge $3 per month to customers whose usage was exclusively on their 2G or 3G networks. The report said the charge would appear on monthly bills and could be avoided by using newer network service. It was not described as a fee for all Rogers or Fido subscribers. MobileSyrup’s April 2025 report reproduced this wording from a Rogers support document: “This is used to recover part of the cost of maintaining our legacy systems. This charge will apply monthly as long as your usage is on our 2G and 3G networks.”
That report does not establish whether a particular customer was charged. For an account-specific answer, check the bill notice and contact Rogers or Fido support.
How the 3G shutdown date changed
The April 2025 fee report preceded Rogers’ later change to its 3G retirement schedule. The Canadian Telecommunications Association’s 3G Network Retirement FAQ, dated September 28, 2026, lists Rogers, including Fido, as having begun retirement on August 7, 2025. The fee notice’s “starting next month” referred to May 2025; it should not be read as a fee starting in 2026.

Why a 4G phone may still need replacing
A phone labelled 4G LTE or 5G is not automatically ready for calls after 3G retirement. It must support VoLTE—voice calls over LTE—and be compatible with the carrier’s network. The Telecommunications Association warns that an LTE phone without VoLTE cannot make calls, including emergency calls, after its carrier retires 3G. Data may still work where LTE coverage is available, but that does not restore voice calling. A 3G-only phone loses both voice and data service where 3G has been discontinued.
A compatible LTE or 5G phone with VoLTE can continue voice and data service where it has coverage. The association says, “VoLTE enables faster call connection times and improved voice quality service.”

What to check before buying a replacement phone
- Confirm the exact model. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or device documentation, then confirm compatibility with Rogers or Fido. A general 4G or 5G label is not enough.
- Verify VoLTE support and use. Confirm that VoLTE is supported for the specific handset and carrier, and that your calls use VoLTE.
- Check network compatibility. Ask the carrier whether the phone’s LTE/5G bands and configuration work on its network. Do not assume a model bought outside Canada will be compatible.
- Compare the cost with your needs. If your current handset cannot make calls on the newer network, a “VoLTE-capable 4G LTE smartphone” may be a suitable replacement—but only after carrier compatibility is confirmed.
The association recommends checking with the carrier or consulting the phone’s documentation and manufacturer specifications. The available public information does not establish whether Rogers or Fido certified a particular customer’s handset, charged that customer, or offered them a no-cost upgrade.

Fido’s later 2G transition is a separate issue from the 2025 3G fee notice. Fido’s 2G network support page says the $3 monthly legacy fee for exclusive 2G use would no longer be added after June 30, 2026. A June 2026 report also discusses the later 2G retirement and its separate fee conditions. Those developments do not establish a new 3G fee beginning in October 2026.
