Keys described the information as a “whisper” and said £500m was “nearer the mark.” His claim has not been confirmed as a PIF asking price or the start of a formal sale process.
What did Richard Keys say about Newcastle United?
In a personal blog post quoted by SPORTbible on 25 March 2026, Keys wrote: “Another whisper I picked up recently – and I don’t think this will come as a surprise to anybody – I’m told the Saudis are looking to sell Newcastle.” He added that there were “interested parties,” that the Saudis wanted £1bn, and that “£500m is nearer the mark.”
Those figures are part of Keys’s reported claim, not a price confirmed by PIF. The coverage available does not establish that PIF formally put Newcastle up for sale, set an asking price, or began a sale process.
Is PIF selling Newcastle United?
Later reporting pointed in a different direction. SPORTbible reported that Chronicle Live said PIF had “no intention” of selling the club. On 17 April, BBC Sport reported that sources familiar with PIF said it remained committed to Newcastle and that the club hierarchy had been told Newcastle was unaffected by PIF’s reassessment of other investments. These are reported source positions, not a public PIF statement directly addressing Keys’s March claim.

BBC Sport also reported that PIF governor and Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan had spoken generally about the fund’s priorities. Quoted by the state-owned Al Arabiya news channel, he said: “Whether due to the war or reasons related to economic feasibility, we continuously reassess our priorities.” That comment was not a statement that PIF planned to sell Newcastle.
How the later investment reports differ from a sale
In June 2026, Sports Business Journal, summarizing Bloomberg reporting, described exploratory talks involving Arctos Partners and other sports investors. The reported discussions concerned potential investment in Newcastle and its stadium redevelopment. A possible stake sale was characterized as bringing in new investment, rather than an existing investor exiting the club. The talks could also end without a deal or direct investment.

That is a different transaction from PIF selling its ownership of Newcastle outright. The report did not establish a completed deal.
What do the reported valuations mean?
In August, Yahoo Sports summarized Telegraph Sport reporting that PIF valued Newcastle above £2bn and had no plans to sell. This is an attributed valuation and reported intention, not an audited appraisal or an official PIF announcement.

| Figure | What the reporting says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| £1bn | Richard Keys’s March 2026 blog claim, as reported by SPORTbible | Keys attributed this figure to what he said PIF wanted; it is not confirmed as PIF’s asking price. |
| £500m | Keys’s estimate of what he said was “nearer the mark” in the same claim | Not a reported offer, agreed sale value, or verified valuation. |
| Above £2bn | Telegraph Sport reporting summarized by Yahoo Sports in August 2026 | An attributed valuation, not an independently verified appraisal or completed transaction value. |
Why PIF’s wider strategy became part of the speculation
BBC Sport reported that PIF was reassessing its priorities, had sold a 70% share in Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, and had a 2026–2030 strategy emphasizing more sustainable investments. The same report distinguished Newcastle from other sports investments and relayed sources saying PIF remained committed to the club. A broader change in investment priorities may help explain the speculation, but it does not prove a Newcastle sale plan.
Newcastle’s finances are relevant context, not evidence of an ownership decision. BBC Sport reported that club revenue rose from £140.2m in the final full campaign under former owner Mike Ashley to £335.3m in its most recent accounts discussed by the BBC. The BBC also noted that the reported £34.7m pre-tax profit was affected by the sale of the St James’ Park lease to an owner-controlled subsidiary.
