The A$1.1 billion figure in the headline is the Australian-dollar equivalent reported by PerthNow; Rio Tinto’s announcement stated the project cost in US dollars. Rio Tinto’s share is US$389 million.
What the investment will fund
The project will develop new iron ore deposits at the West Angelas hub, part of the Robe River Joint Venture. Rio Tinto says the work is intended to maintain the hub’s annual production capacity at 35 million tonnes, using existing processing infrastructure. The 35 million tonnes is capacity to be sustained, not a stated increase in annual output.
Planned new construction includes non-process infrastructure and 22 kilometres of haul roads. Rio Tinto scheduled first ore for 2027 in its October 2025 announcement; that is a target, not confirmation that production has begun. The company said the project’s capital was already included in its group replacement capital guidance.
Who owns the joint venture
The Robe River Joint Venture interests are Rio Tinto, 53%; Mitsui Iron Ore, 33%; and Nippon Steel, 14%. The US$389 million figure is Rio Tinto’s share of the announced project investment.

- 1/2 pound of small lodestone chips ranging in size from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch. Sold by weight but usually there are around 60 pieces in each bag. Lodestones will attract small metallic objects like staples, paperclips, and iron filings. Lodestones are also attracted to other magnets.
- These lodestones are naturally magnetic and have not been treated in any way. As a natural mix an occasional non-magnetic stone will be found but the vast majority are magnetic. Your satisfaction is guaranteed! A USA mineral from Iron County, Utah
- Lodestones are natures magnet. Lodestones were used anciently to make compasses and for medicinal use.
- Perfect for classrooms or education use. Lodestones are formed from the mineral magnetite that has become naturally magnetic over time.
What the jobs figures mean
Rio Tinto estimated that construction would create about 600 jobs. It also said the hub would have a workforce of about 950 full-time equivalent roles once the project is operational. Those figures describe different things: the first is an estimate of construction employment, while the second is the expected workforce at the hub, not 950 new jobs created by the project.

Rio Tinto said the Yinhawangka and Ngarlawangga Peoples worked with the company to co-design Social Cultural Heritage Management Plans intended to protect and manage cultural heritage and the environment. This is the company’s account of the engagement; the announcement does not independently assess its process or outcomes.
