If scratching a physical Steam Wallet card made its code unreadable, stop scraping and contact Steam Support through its damaged-code process. Steam asks for a clear, unedited photo or scan of the entire back of the card. Keep the card and its matching retail receipt; recovery is not guaranteed, and Steam does not publish a response-time estimate.
Before you contact Steam Support
- Stop rubbing or scraping the code. Further damage may remove more characters. Steam asks you to provide an image of the entire card back and says not to edit or mark the card.
- Recheck similar-looking characters. If the code is still legible but will not redeem, double-check 0/Q/O/D, 1/I, B/8, and G/6. These are character pairs Steam specifically calls out in its Steam Wallet guidance.
- Allow time for activation. A retailer may take several hours to activate a recently purchased card. If the code still fails after that, proceed to Steam Support.
- Keep your proof of purchase. Save the original card and matching retail receipt. Steam’s Wallet FAQ says it cannot assist with codes printed directly on receipts; contact the retailer about those.
How to submit a damaged-code request
Use Steam Support’s instructions for sending Wallet codes to Steam Support. Provide a clear photo or scan showing the entire back of the card. Steam says not to edit or mark the card, so submit the image as-is and do not obscure any part of it. Include the matching receipt if requested in the Wallet guidance.

Steam does not state a guaranteed outcome or a response time for damaged-code requests. Keep the card and receipt while you wait, and do not post or send the full code to people outside the official support process.

Protect the card and your money
Steam Wallet codes can only be redeemed on Steam. A request to pay taxes, bail, a debt, a prize claim, or a delivery fee with Steam gift cards is a strong scam warning. Steam says not to give a Wallet card to someone you do not know.

If you have not shared the code, Steam advises taking the card to the retailer’s customer-service desk to ask whether it is eligible for a refund. Steam says activated but unredeemed cards are normally refundable at retail, but the retailer handles the request and eligibility may depend on its policies and local rules. Steam expects physical retail gift-card stock to run out by the end of 2026. That is Steam’s stated expectation, not a guarantee about stock at every retailer. Steam says existing physical cards remain redeemable, subject to local laws. You can sign in and use Steam’s gift card and Wallet code redemption page; Steam notes that wallet currency is converted where applicable.
