Qantas planned to start its seasonal Perth–Rome service earlier in 2026, extend it into October and add a fourth weekly flight during the peak period. The Western Australian Government’s 2 September 2025 announcement described the expansion as 44 additional services and close to 10,000 extra inbound seats to Western Australia compared with the 2025 season. The announcement does not clarify whether “44 services” means one-way flight sectors or round trips.
What changes on the Perth–Rome route?
In its 2 September 2025 announcement, the Government of Western Australia said the seasonal service would begin on 3 May 2026 and operate through 23 October 2026—eight weeks longer than the schedule then planned. It also said peak frequency would rise from three to four flights per week. The government attributed 44 additional services and close to 10,000 extra inbound seats to Western Australia to the expansion, compared with the 2025 season. Read the government announcement.
The 44 figure is not defined as 44 return trips in the announcement, so it should not be read as that. The separate inbound-seat estimate is an announced comparison with the 2025 season, not a guarantee of seats available on a particular date.
When does the extra weekly flight start?
Qantas’s application to the International Air Services Commission proposed adding a fourth weekly service from 27 June 2026. The proposed aircraft was a Boeing 787 configured with 236 seats. The airline’s letter said: “From 27 June 2026, Qantas Airways Limited (Qantas) plans to add a fourth weekly service between Perth and Rome on the Italy route.”

The announced end dates differ: the Western Australian Government’s 2025 announcement gave 23 October 2026, while Qantas’s route page currently lists Perth–Rome through 27 October 2026. Treat the last operating day and flight days as schedule-dependent, and confirm them against live availability before booking.
Also distinguish a Perth–Rome flight from a Sydney–Rome itinerary via Perth. An itinerary that starts in Sydney and connects in Perth is not the same as a nonstop flight from Perth. The booking result should show the actual sectors and any connection.

What changed in Qantas’s May 2026 update?
In an update dated 1 May 2026, Qantas said its additional Perth–Rome flights were extended by another three months, until the end of October. This was a later schedule adjustment, separate from the original seasonal expansion announced in September 2025. Qantas said broader Australia–Europe schedule changes reflected high fuel costs and strong demand for Europe travel. Read Qantas’s 1 May 2026 update.
Qantas also said the broader changes would provide an additional 2,000 seats to and from Europe each week. That was a network-wide figure, not a Perth–Rome-only estimate.
