Re:

Sony Ends Production of Recordable Blu-ray Discs and MiniDisc Media

Sony’s 2025 production decision applied to specific recordable media, not all Blu-ray movies. Here’s what it covered and how the separate 2028 PlayStation disc change differs.

Sony’s January 2025 announcement concerned specific recordable media—not every Blu-ray disc. It covered Sony’s recordable Blu-ray discs, MiniDiscs and MD Data media for recording, and MiniDV cassettes. It did not announce that Blu-ray movies or all Blu-ray releases were ending.

Is Sony discontinuing Blu-ray discs?

Sony said production of its listed recordable media would end as of February 2025, with no successor models. That means the announcement applies to blank discs used to record or store data, not the entire Blu-ray format. IEEE Spectrum reported that new Blu-ray movies remained available after the announcement and described the affected recordable products as sold to consumers in Japan and in some professional markets elsewhere. Read IEEE Spectrum’s January 2025 report.

Factory-pressed movie discs and blank recordable discs serve different purposes. A movie disc is manufactured with its content already on it; a blank BD-R or BD-RE is designed to be written to with compatible hardware. Sony’s notice concerned the latter category.

Which Sony media products were affected?

  • Blu-ray Disc media for recording: Sony’s recordable Blu-ray media, not all Blu-ray movie releases.
  • MiniDisc for recording: Recordable MiniDisc media.
  • MD Data for recording: Sony’s recordable MD Data media.
  • MiniDV cassettes: A separate video-tape format, also included in the production discontinuation.

Sony’s stated rationale, as quoted by IEEE Spectrum from an unnamed Sony representative, was: “Considering the market environment and future growth potential of the market, we have decided to discontinue production.” The report supplied no sales figure or more specific explanation for the decision.

Are Blu-ray movies and existing disc games going away?

No. Sony’s 2025 notice was not an announcement ending all Blu-ray movies or games. It addressed the specified recordable media. IEEE Spectrum reported that new Blu-ray movies remained available, so the announcement should not be read as an end to factory-pressed movie discs.

There is a separate, later PlayStation development. On July 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that production of physical game discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles would be discontinued starting January 2028. The company said the transition does not affect games already released, or those released before January 2028, in disc format. This announcement concerns new PlayStation games and is distinct from Sony’s 2025 decision about blank recordable media. See the PlayStation Blog announcement.

Are MiniDiscs still being made?

Sony’s notice said it would end production of its MiniDiscs for recording as of February 2025, with no successor models. That statement is about Sony’s production of the listed media. It does not establish that every seller’s remaining stock disappeared at once, or that every other manufacturer stopped making recordable discs.

For current MiniDisc use, separate the media question from the hardware question: blank recordable MD stock and a working MiniDisc recorder or player are different requirements. The announcement does not verify any particular supplier, product listing, or available stock.

What should buyers check before purchasing blank Blu-ray media?

Sony’s exit makes it especially important to verify the exact product and whether it fits the job. It does not establish that any specific listing is in stock or compatible with a buyer’s equipment.
