Amazon’s standard U.S. membership is $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Paying monthly for 12 months at the listed rate totals $179.88, so annual billing costs $40.88 less if you keep Prime for a full year. Monthly billing may make more sense if you expect to use the membership for only part of the year.

Amazon says Prime shipping is available on more than 300 million U.S. items, with same- or next-day delivery on tens of millions of items. The eligible selection and delivery speed depend on the product and address. Members also get access to member-only deals and Prime shopping events. Video, music, gaming, reading, and photo storage
Amazon lists Prime Video, Amazon Music listening, Luna cloud gaming, Kindle reading benefits, and unlimited full-resolution Amazon Photos storage with 5 GB of video storage. Catalogs and features can be limited or change over time, and some require an additional paid upgrade.
Prime Video’s included tier is ad-supported, according to NerdWallet’s 2026 guide. That guide lists Prime Video Ultra, an ad-free option, at $4.99 monthly or $45.99 annually. Confirm the current name, price, and terms at Amazon before subscribing; the ad-free add-on is a separate cost from Prime.

Grocery, fuel, delivery, and health offers
- Grocery: Amazon lists grocery delivery and discounts, with availability and terms dependent on location and participating services.
- Fuel: Amazon lists a $0.10-per-gallon discount at more than 7,500 participating bp, Amoco, and participating ampm and Thorntons locations. The discount is useful only where a participating station is accessible.
- Restaurant delivery: Grubhub+ is listed as a Prime benefit. Amazon assigns it a $120 annual value, but that is not equivalent to $120 in cash savings unless you would otherwise use the eligible service and meet its terms.
- Health and prescriptions: Selected offers are available, subject to eligibility and provider participation.
Amazon estimates nearly $70 in annual fuel savings using assumptions about driving and fuel use. Treat that as Amazon’s modeled estimate, not a promised result for an individual member; your savings depend on how much you drive and whether you buy fuel at participating locations.
How to decide if Prime is worth the cost
- Choose the right fee to evaluate. For a full year, compare benefits with $139 annual billing or $179.88 for 12 monthly payments at the current listed rate. If you need Prime for fewer than 12 months, compare the monthly fee for only the months you expect to keep it.
- Count shipping fees you would genuinely avoid. Include only eligible orders you would make anyway and the delivery charges you would otherwise pay. Do not count purchases prompted by having Prime as savings.
- Value only benefits you expect to use. Consider streaming, music, reading, gaming, photo storage, grocery or restaurant offers, and fuel discounts according to your own habits. Amazon’s stated benefit valuations are not guaranteed personal savings.
- Check access and extra charges. Confirm delivery coverage for your address, local availability for grocery and fuel offers, eligibility for discounted plans, and any separate charge needed for ad-free video.
- Account for household sharing correctly. Amazon Family can share broad benefits with one other adult and some digital content with children in the household. The Associated Press reported that shipping benefits could no longer be shared with people outside the account holder’s household starting October 1, 2025. Do not assume a non-household member can split the membership cost in exchange for shipping access; see the AP report on the change.
Who is most likely to get value from Prime?
Prime is more likely to make financial sense for someone who frequently orders eligible items, avoids delivery charges they would otherwise pay, and uses several included benefits. It is less compelling if you shop through Amazon rarely, do not use the added services, or would pay extra for ad-free video. There is no universal break-even number of orders: shipping charges vary, and the membership’s other benefits have value only if they fit your needs.
