Truveta announced on January 13, 2025, that it had raised $320 million in preferred equity at a valuation above $1 billion, while launching plans for a large genomics research project. The funding announcement was reported by GeekWire and the company. The project is a research collaboration linking genetic data with de-identified medical records—not a consumer DNA-testing service.
What is the Truveta Genome Project?
Truveta described a plan to generate genetic data from tens of millions of consented volunteers and connect those data with de-identified electronic health records for research. The launch announcement said the Regeneron Genetics Center would sequence the exomes of the first ten million participants. That figure is an announced target, not confirmation that ten million exomes have been completed. Truveta’s January 2025 announcement and its project page describe the planned approach.

The company framed the work as a way to study relationships between genetics, health and disease. Those are intended research uses, not a guarantee of specific medical discoveries or outcomes.
Who invested $320 million in Truveta?
Truveta said the January 13, 2025, preferred-equity round totaled $320 million and valued the company at more than $1 billion. GeekWire reported that the investment came from 17 health systems, Illumina and Regeneron. The named investments below are disclosed components of the round, not a complete accounting of all $320 million.

How will the project use patient samples?
Truveta’s stated plan starts with leftover biospecimens from routine laboratory tests, rather than a separate blood draw for the project. Participating health systems would seek consent to use samples and associated data for research. The company’s explanation says participation involves receiving care at a member health system and consenting to the research use of leftover specimens; eligibility and enrollment should not be assumed to be available at every system or site. Truveta’s explanation of participation
Rank #2
- A member health system seeks a patient’s consent for research use of leftover specimens and associated data.
- Regeneron Genetics Center sequences the specimens; the initial announced plan called for exome sequencing of up to ten million people.
- Genomic data are de-identified and linked with de-identified medical records for research through Truveta Data.
- Truveta says samples may be stored for future multi-omics sequencing.
The launch materials do not establish that individual participants will receive genetic results. The project should not be confused with a retail DNA kit or a clinical diagnostic service.
Which organizations are involved?
- Truveta: Organizes the health-system collaboration and describes the research data platform.
- Regeneron Genetics Center: The sequencing partner named for the project’s initial exome work.
- Illumina: An investor and sequencing technology partner.
- Microsoft Azure: Named as the project’s exclusive cloud provider in Truveta’s launch materials.
Truveta said its existing Truveta Data resource then contained de-identified electronic health record data from more than 120 million patients across 30 health systems. That was a company-reported figure from January 13, 2025, not a current independently verified count. It describes the existing clinical-data resource, not completed genomic coverage. What is established—and what remains a target?
The funding round and project launch were announced in January 2025. The project’s scale, sequencing, and sample-storage details describe plans; the cited announcements do not establish that the participant target has been reached or that the full genomic resource is operational at the announced scale. Truveta called the project “largest and most diverse” and described it as more than ten times the scale of other efforts, but those are company claims. The materials cited here do not provide a like-for-like methodology that independently verifies those comparisons.
