Cal AI is a photo-based calorie and macro tracking app launched in May 2024 by Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack, who were high-school students when TechCrunch profiled them in March 2025. The founders’ headline claim of more than five million downloads was not independently verified by TechCrunch; Google Play showed a lower, rounded threshold at the time. MyFitnessPal announced in March 2026 that it had acquired Cal AI and planned to keep it as a standalone app.

What Cal AI does

Cal AI is designed to estimate calories and macronutrients from a meal photo. Its Apple App Store description says users can take a picture or select an existing image, then review the estimate. The app also describes manual meal logging and the ability to adjust serving amounts in grams. These are the app’s stated features, not evidence that its estimates are accurate for any particular meal.

The store listing cautions that results depend on the photo, portion size and recipe. A picture may not reveal ingredients, cooking fats, or the actual weight of a serving, so an estimate can differ from what a person ate. The listing also says Cal AI is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice. Cal AI’s Apple App Store listing

Who built Cal AI, and what was claimed about downloads?

TechCrunch reported on March 16, 2025 that co-founders Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack were 18-year-old high-school students and that Cal AI had launched in May 2024. Yadegari told TechCrunch the app had passed five million downloads in eight months, but the publication said it could not validate the founders’ download or revenue claims. Treat five million as an attributed, unverified founder claim—not an independently audited total. TechCrunch’s March 16, 2025 profile

  • 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Equipped with 4 high-precision sensors, the scale can weigh your foods between 3 g - 5000 g in 1 g increment

TechCrunch also reported that Google Play showed more than one million downloads at the time. That was a historical store observation, not a precise count or a current total. A store threshold is rounded and does not establish the exact number of installations.

How many downloads does Cal AI have now?

The Google Play listing surfaced in 2026 shows “1M+” downloads and says it was updated August 14, 2026. That threshold does not establish an exact cumulative figure, and it should not be read as confirmation of the five-million claim. Cal AI’s Google Play listing

  • 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: Share your progress with coaches, doctors, or friends, and you can sync your nutrition data with Fitbit, and Apple Health

Google Play and Apple listings surfaced for the app carry different developer labels. The available listing information does not reconcile those labels, so a store entry with a similar name should not automatically be assumed to be the acquired Cal AI product.

Is Cal AI accurate?

The available sources do not establish a quantified accuracy rate or an independent accuracy study specific to Cal AI. Its own listing says estimates depend on the image, portion size and recipe. Yadegari told TechCrunch, “We have found that different models are better with different foods,” but that statement describes the company’s approach; it is not an independent test of the app’s results.

  • 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: Accurately weighs up to 11 lb/5 kg with 1 g increments

  • 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻: Just wipe down the 304 food-grade stainless steel surfaces to keep clean
  • 𝗟𝗖𝗗 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆: Backlit LCD screen with large fonts for easy reading

For a more controlled log, weigh the serving and enter its amount rather than relying only on a photo. Cal AI says users can adjust serving grams, and a kitchen scale can measure weight. A scale does not confirm the calorie or macro values assigned to the food, especially when ingredients or preparation methods are uncertain.

Did MyFitnessPal buy Cal AI?

Yes. MyFitnessPal announced on March 2, 2026 that it had acquired Cal AI and planned to continue operating it as a standalone product while investing in its development and marketing. The announcement establishes the acquisition and stated plan; it does not resolve the different developer labels shown on the store listings. MyFitnessPal’s acquisition announcement

What to consider before using a photo-based tracker

  • Speed: Taking a photo may be quicker than entering each ingredient, but convenience does not guarantee a closer estimate.
  • Control: Manual entry and gram adjustments give users a way to record known foods or serving weights.
  • Uncertainty: Photos can obscure ingredients and portion details; the app itself flags these as factors affecting estimates.
  • Purpose: The listing disclaims medical use. Do not treat app estimates as clinical guidance.
