What to include in an internship recommendation letter
Follow any instructions from the internship program about the recipient, length, submission route, or required prompts. There is no single format every employer requires. For general guidance, the University of Chicago recommends choosing two or three relevant strengths, supporting them with examples, and closing with the writer’s signature and title (University of Chicago Career Advancement).
- Salutation: Address the hiring manager or selection committee by name if known. Otherwise, use a suitable general greeting.
- Opening: Name the applicant and internship, state your support, and explain your role and relationship to the applicant, including how long you have known them.
- Evidence: Develop two or three strengths that matter for the opportunity. For each, describe something you personally observed and explain how it shows the student can contribute.
- Closing: Reaffirm your support, offer to provide more information if appropriate, and sign with your name, title, and contact details.

How to choose evidence that makes the letter credible
Use examples that are relevant to the internship, specific enough to be meaningful, based on what the recommender directly observed, and supported by results the writer can substantiate. A useful pattern is strength, example, then relevance: name the skill, describe what the student did, and connect that behavior to the role.
For instance, replace a bare claim such as “hard-working” with a description of a real assignment or task: what the student was responsible for, what they did, and what effect the writer knows it had. Avoid invented achievements or outcomes. Numbers in published sample letters are illustrative unless independently verified; Rutgers–Newark’s sample includes a campaign result that should not be presented as a general or independently established statistic (Rutgers–Newark).

Should the letter come from a teacher or a supervisor?
Choose someone who has directly observed work relevant to the internship, rather than relying on a universal ranking of academic and professional recommenders. University and career-office guidance describes both academic and work-based evidence; the better source depends on the opportunity and what the writer can credibly discuss.

For either source, choose examples for their relevance, specificity, firsthand basis, and verifiability—not simply because they sound impressive.
What to send someone you ask for a recommendation
Give the recommender enough context to write a targeted letter. USC advises providing the application or position description and your resume or CV; LMU Munich also recommends giving the writer information that helps them address the company’s requirements (USC Career Center; LMU Munich).
- The internship description and organization name
- Your resume or CV
- The application deadline and submission instructions
- A brief reminder of shared projects, assignments, or accomplishments the recommender may have observed
Ask early enough for the writer to decide whether they can provide a thoughtful recommendation, and follow the program’s instructions for sending or uploading it.
