There is no single definitive, audited figure for Ratan Tata’s net worth. Published estimates range from about ₹3,800 crore to ₹16,448 crore, but they come from different sources and dates and are not directly reconciled. The key distinction: the trusts’ large ownership stake in Tata Sons was not his personal wealth.
What are the reported estimates of Ratan Tata’s net worth?
The available figures differ substantially. Each should be read as an estimate attributed to its publisher, not as a final accounting of his personal estate.
| Estimate | Publisher and date | What the source says |
|---|---|---|
| About ₹3,800 crore | The Week, reporting the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022 | The list placed Tata 421st among India’s wealthiest, according to The Week. The Week |
| ₹16,448 crore | Fortune India, October 10, 2024 | Fortune India attributed the estimate to Fortune India-Waterfield research. It said the majority was attributed to stakes in Tata Sons, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Titan Company and Tata Steel. Fortune India |
| Broadly ₹3,800 crore | Mint, 2025 | A Mint opinion article characterized the wealth revealed by Tata’s will as broadly estimated at this amount. It is not a final audited estate value. Mint |
The sources do not provide a common, audited methodology that reconciles the different totals. The estimates should not be added together, treated as exact, or presented as interchangeable measures.
Why Tata Group’s scale is not the same as his personal wealth
Tata Group says trusts own 66% of Tata Sons. Those trusts support charitable causes, including education, health, culture and livelihoods. Their ownership stake is not Ratan Tata’s personal net worth, and the group’s overall assets or value should not be attributed to him simply because he led it. Tata Group’s ownership overview

Ratan Naval Tata (December 28, 1937–October 9, 2024) became chairman of Tata Sons in 1991 and later chaired Tata Trusts. Ratan Tata should not be confused with Sir Ratan Tata (1871–1918), another member of the family. Tata Trusts says Sir Ratan left a large part of his property for charitable purposes and that the Sir Ratan Tata Trust was established in 1919 with a corpus of ₹8 million.
