Tata Group and Tata Trusts announced his death; the Associated Press reported that he died at a Mumbai hospital. His legacy spans the international growth of the conglomerate and its philanthropic work, but the outcomes of the group’s major acquisitions were not uniform.
When did Ratan Tata die, and what is known about his death?
Tata died on October 9, 2024, at age 86. Tata Group announced his death in a statement from Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran, and Tata Trusts also confirmed the date. The Associated Press reported that Tata died at a hospital in Mumbai. Tata Group’s October 9 statement described him as a mentor, guide and friend to Chandrasekaran.
No specific cause of death was announced in the sources reporting his death. On October 7, two days before his death, Reuters reported that Tata had said he was undergoing medical investigations related to his age and that rumors about his health were unfounded. He wrote, “There is no cause for concern. I remain in good spirits.” That statement does not establish a cause of death. Reuters’ October 7 report records what he said at the time.
Who was Ratan Tata?
Ratan Naval Tata was an Indian business leader who joined Tata Group in 1961 and became chairman in 1991, succeeding his uncle J. R. D. Tata. He retired as chairman in December 2012, returned briefly as interim chairman in October 2016, and stepped aside again when N. Chandrasekaran became chairman in 2017, according to the Associated Press. Reuters described him as leading the conglomerate for more than 20 years.

Under Tata’s leadership, the group expanded its international reach through acquisitions and grew into a business with operations across industries. The Associated Press reported that group revenue exceeded $100 billion by the time he retired; that figure is AP’s reported measure, not a figure independently verified here against a company financial statement.
What was Ratan Tata known for in business?
Tata’s chairmanship is closely associated with acquisitions that gave Tata Group a broader international footprint. Reuters reported these deal values and dates:
| Acquisition | Reported deal value | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Tetley | $432 million | Acquired in 2000, according to Reuters. |
| Corus | $13 billion | Acquired in 2007. The Associated Press noted Corus later faced difficulties, so the deal’s outcome was not an unqualified success. |
| Jaguar Land Rover | $2.3 billion | Acquired from Ford in 2008, according to Reuters. |
The deals illustrate the scale of Tata Group’s expansion beyond India, but they should not be treated as a single, uniformly successful story. In particular, AP’s account of Corus’ later difficulties complicates any simple narrative of growth through acquisitions. Reuters’ account of Tata’s career and the acquisitions and AP’s obituary provide the reported values and context.

Philanthropy was a central part of Tata’s public record. Tata Group’s announcement highlighted his work in education and healthcare; AP also described efforts involving skill development and disaster relief. Reuters reported that philanthropic trusts hold about two-thirds of Tata Sons’ share capital. That is an ownership fact about the company that controls Tata Group, not a statement that Tata personally donated two-thirds of his income or wealth.
Chandrasekaran said the group expanded globally under Tata’s stewardship while remaining committed to its “moral compass.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, quoted by AP, said Tata’s contribution “went far beyond boardrooms.” These tributes reflect the role that public service and philanthropy played alongside his business leadership.

- In the course of his nearly 98 years, Rockefeller was known as both a rapacious robber baron, whose Standard Oil Company rode roughshod over an industry, and a philanthropist who donated money lavishly to universities and medical centers.
