The transaction did close: Rangers later announced that a consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and including 49ers Enterprises had acquired majority ownership, with BBC reporting that the consortium bought 51% of the club.
What did Tom English report about the Rangers takeover?
In a BBC Sport report published on 20 February 2025, Tom English wrote that sources close to negotiations expected the deal to complete between April and June. The report described broad agreement, a prospective purchase of more than 50% of Rangers shares, and the assumption of debt. Read the BBC report.
The forecast was attributed to unnamed sources close to the negotiations. It should not be read as an on-record statement by English, Rangers, or a named investor, and it did not mean the transaction had already closed.
Did the 49ers buy Rangers?
Rangers did change majority ownership, but the buyer was a consortium—not 49ers Enterprises acting alone. On 30 May 2025, BBC reported that a US consortium including 49ers Enterprises completed a 51% acquisition, with Scottish FA approval. BBC’s completion report describes the transaction.

In its official announcement the following day, Rangers named Andrew Cavenagh as the consortium leader and Paraag Marathe as a member of the ownership group. The club said the Scottish FA had approved the change in majority ownership. Rangers’ ownership announcement sets out the club’s account.
What does the £20 million investment mean?
Rangers announced a £20 million investment commitment, subject to shareholder approval. The club later said shareholders approved the resolutions at its general meeting, including authority for the board to issue £20 million of new shares. The club’s EGM statement reported that all resolutions received more than 98% support.

An announced commitment and authorization to issue shares are not evidence that the entire £20 million has already been spent. The club’s announcements do not establish that the funds guarantee transfer spending, improved results, or sporting success.
How the update unfolded
- 20 February 2025: BBC’s Tom English reported an expected April–June completion window and prospective terms, based on sources close to negotiations.
- 30 May 2025: BBC reported the completed 51% acquisition by the US consortium and Scottish FA approval.
- 31 May 2025: Rangers announced the new majority ownership, naming Cavenagh as consortium leader and describing the £20 million investment commitment.
- After the acquisition: Rangers said shareholders approved authority for a £20 million share issue.
What Cavenagh said about the takeover
In the club’s ownership announcement, incoming chairman Andrew Cavenagh said: “We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by the Rangers Board, shareholders, staff, and supporters. This club’s history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn’t win matches.”
