Re:

Are Microsoft Cashback Emails a Scam or Legitimate?

Microsoft Cashback is legitimate, but an email using its name may still be phishing. Learn how to verify the balance independently, assess PayPal requests, spot red flags, and recover after clicking.

Microsoft Cashback is a real program, but the email may still be a scam. Do not click its buttons or use its links. Open the Cashback dashboard independently at https://www.bing.com/shop/deals/cashback and check whether the balance, merchant, transaction, and redemption status match. Never pay an activation or release fee or provide a password or security code.

Microsoft Cashback is real—but the email may not be

Microsoft Cashback is a legitimate shopping-rewards program. However, an email labeled “Microsoft Cashback” is trustworthy only when its details match the Cashback account you open independently through Microsoft or Bing.

The safest rule is simple: do not decide based on the sender name, logo, inbox placement, or email links. Open the Cashback dashboard manually and verify the balance, transaction, and redemption status there.

Microsoft’s current U.S. Cashback page says official Cashback emails come from [email protected], that the program is free to join, and that Microsoft will not ask users to pay to access their cashback. Those are useful indicators, but the visible From address can be spoofed, and even legitimate Microsoft infrastructure has been abused for malicious messages. Quick verdict: Microsoft Cashback is legitimate. Treat the particular email as unverified until the same balance or transaction appears in the account you reach independently. Never pay an activation or release fee, send a password or security code, or redeem through an email button.

What Microsoft Cashback is

Microsoft Cashback is the current name for the former Bing Rebates program. It rewards eligible users for qualifying purchases at participating retailers after they activate an offer through Microsoft services such as Bing, Microsoft Edge, MSN or Microsoft Start, Copilot, and certain mobile apps.

Microsoft says the program is available in 36 countries, including the United States. Availability, participating merchants, offers, redemption methods, and functionality can vary by market, device, and browser version, so information on a U.S. page should not automatically be treated as universal.

Eligibility generally requires an active personal Microsoft account, continuous enrollment in Microsoft Rewards, being at least 18 years old, living in a participating territory, maintaining a valid redemption account, and allowing enough cookies for the purchase to be tracked. See the Microsoft Cashback terms for the applicable conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You may not remember signing up. A person can activate an offer while signed in through Bing or Edge without separately thinking of that action as “enrolling in Cashback.” That possibility does not prove that a surprising email is genuine; it simply means that “I do not remember signing up” is not, by itself, conclusive.

Cashback is different from Microsoft Rewards points

Microsoft Cashback is a shopping-rebate balance connected to qualifying purchases. Microsoft Rewards is a separate promotional points system. The two should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both are associated with a Microsoft account. Microsoft’s Services Agreement lists them separately.

What a legitimate Microsoft Cashback email may say

A genuine program message may contain a monthly Cashback statement, a balance or transaction summary, notice that a reward has become available, a reminder to redeem a completed balance, a terms update, or information related to PayPal or another redemption service.

Microsoft’s current U.S. FAQ identifies [email protected] as the sender for official Cashback emails. Read that as a current Microsoft-published check—not as a guarantee. An attacker may forge the visible address, and a message authenticated by Microsoft infrastructure can still contain malicious content if an account, service, or workflow has been abused.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Public Microsoft Q&A posts include reports of messages titled “Your Microsoft Cashback Monthly Statement” and messages requesting PayPal verification. These reports help explain why recipients see such emails, but they do not prove that every email with the same subject is authentic. Microsoft Q&A: Cashback statement reports; Microsoft Q&A: PayPal verification reports.

How to verify your exact email without clicking it

Use this procedure whether the message claims you have a few dollars, a large balance, a monthly statement, or a PayPal transfer waiting.

  1. Do not use anything inside the email. Do not click Claim, Transfer, Verify PayPal, View balance, Unsubscribe, or any other button. Do not call a number in the message or open an attachment.
  2. Open a new browser window. Manually type or use a trusted bookmark for Microsoft or Bing. The current Cashback dashboard is:
    https://www.bing.com/shop/deals/cashback
  3. Sign in with the relevant personal Microsoft account. If you have several Microsoft accounts, check the one associated with the email address, but do not follow a sign-in link from the message.
  4. Check the balance and activity. Look for the merchant, purchase amount, transaction date, reward amount, status, and estimated completion date.
  5. Compare the account with the email. A matching balance alone is less useful than matching transaction details. If the email describes a reward that does not appear in Cashback activity, do not redeem it.
  6. Redeem only from the dashboard. If the reward is marked Complete and redemption is available, begin the transfer from the independently opened Microsoft/Bing workflow.
  7. Use sender and link checks as secondary evidence. Inspect the full sender address and destination without opening the link. These checks support the dashboard result; they do not replace it.

Microsoft’s own advice for suspicious messages is to avoid the embedded link and visit the organization’s website independently. Microsoft: protect yourself from phishing.

Pending versus Complete

Cashback normally moves from Pending to Complete after the purchase is reviewed. Microsoft says many rewards take roughly 30–90 days, and travel-related purchases can take longer. Its terms say most rewards can take up to 90 days to appear, with travel eligibility often determined after the trip is completed.

WHonor RFID Blocking Card 6 Pack, Anti-Theft Debit & Credit Card Protector
  • Secure Your Information: Simply insert the RFID blocking card into your wallet to protect against digital pickpocketing. Block unauthorized scanning of your contactless cards, including credit/debit cards, passports, driver's licenses - to safeguard your identity and financial security
  • Effective Protection: Our RFID blocking card utilizes advanced electromagnetic shielding technology, which features an embedded antenna mesh and chip that instantly detects and scrambles scanning attempts, providing consistent and reliable protection for the entire wallet
  • Ultra Slim & Easy to Use: Credit-card-sized and just 0.03 inches (0.76 mm) thick, it slips easily into your wallet, purse or card holder adding no bulk. No charging or batteries needed. It will not demagnetize other cards, nor interfere with your phone signals
  • A Thoughtful Gift: Give the practical gift of security. Effortlessly protecting your loved ones from digital theft – offering instant peace of mind, which is a truly meaningful way to show your care
  • Test the Card: Test our RFID blocking card at self-checkout: Layer your contactless card with our RFID card on the reader - payment fails instantly, error message pops up

Therefore, a legitimate-looking email about a pending or estimated reward may not mean that money is immediately transferable. Conversely, an email claiming that a balance is instantly available—with no matching purchase or activity in the dashboard—is suspicious.

How to inspect the sender and links

The full address matters more than the name shown in your inbox. Microsoft’s current Cashback FAQ names [email protected]. Addresses such as [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected] are different addresses.

Also watch the domain structure. In microsoft.com.example.com, the controlling domain is example.com, not Microsoft. Be alert to look-alikes such as micros0ft.com or rnicrosoft.com.

For a link, hover over it on a desktop. On Android, long-press it; on iPhone or iPad, use a light long-press to preview the destination. A page that visually resembles Microsoft is not proof that it belongs to Microsoft. The safest option remains opening the dashboard yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft-owned services may use domains such as microsoft.com or bing.com, but do not create a simplistic “the link is on a familiar domain, so it is safe” rule. Redirects, compromised pages, misleading subdomains, and malicious content can defeat that approach.

Headers and authentication for advanced users

If the dashboard check is inconclusive, inspect the original message headers.

In Gmail: open Gmail in a browser, open the message, select the three-dot menu, choose Show original, and review the authentication results and full headers. Google also provides a Messageheader analyzer.

In Outlook: use Microsoft’s instructions for viewing Internet message headers.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Look for SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results; alignment between the authenticated domain and the visible From domain; unusual Reply-To addresses; suspicious intermediate domains; and unexpected redirects.

Passing SPF, DKIM, or DMARC is helpful evidence that a domain authorized the message. It does not prove that the offer was intended for you or that every link and instruction is safe. In other words, authentication can help establish where a message came from; it does not validate everything inside it. Google’s explanation of email authentication.

Red flags that strongly suggest a scam

Email behavior What to do
Requests an activation, processing, release, tax, or verification fee Stop. Microsoft says it will not ask you to pay to access Cashback.
Requests your Microsoft password by email Treat it as a scam indicator. Microsoft says it will never ask for a password in email.
Requests a Microsoft security code or one-time passcode Never share the code through the email or a related phone interaction.
Requests gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, or a refundable deposit Do not send anything.
Asks you to call a number to cancel, release, or verify cashback Do not call. Fake-order scams use phone calls to obtain financial information.
Includes a Word, Excel, ZIP, executable, or unexpected attachment Do not open it. Attachments can contain malware.
Uses urgent deadlines or threats Urgency is a common phishing tactic. Verify independently.
Claims a large reward without a matching purchase or account history Treat it as suspicious.
Uses a look-alike domain, odd spelling, generic greeting, poor grammar, or strange formatting These are warning signs, although their absence does not prove legitimacy.
Landed in the inbox rather than spam Do not treat delivery location as a security certification.
Uses a Microsoft logo Do not treat branding as proof; logos are easy to copy.
Contains a plausible Microsoft or Bing link but the dashboard has no matching activity Do not proceed. Report the message as phishing.

Microsoft’s guidance covers common phishing indicators, fake-order scams, malicious attachments, suspicious phone numbers, and independent verification. Phishing guidance; fake-order scam guidance.

Is PayPal verification part of Microsoft Cashback?

PayPal redemption can be legitimate. Microsoft’s current Cashback FAQ says that once a reward is complete, users can transfer the balance to a linked PayPal account. The terms also require an eligible redemption account, and available redemption services vary by location.

KF-Premium RFID Blocking Card (2 Pack) - 0.9mm Ultra Thin Debit & Credit Card Protector - One Card Shields Your Whole Wallet - Anti Fraud Contactless NFC Wallet Defender for Travel & Passport
  • ONE CARD PROTECTS YOUR WHOLE WALLET: Drop a single KF-Premium card into your wallet, purse, or card holder and every card sitting near it is shielded from contactless RFID and NFC scans, so you do not need a separate sleeve on each card. This 2-pack covers a second wallet, a passport holder, or a family member.
  • ULTRA THIN AT 0.9MM, BARELY THERE: Each blocking card is only 0.9mm thick, about as slim as one of your bank cards, so it slides into any wallet slot without the bulk of foil sleeves or switching to a new wallet. Slim enough that you forget it is working.
  • STOPS FRAUD BEFORE IT STARTS: The armoured shield design sends out an interfering counter-signal that blocks unauthorized RFID and NFC readers from skimming your debit cards, credit cards, and IDs. It guards against contactless payment fraud, identity theft, and digital pickpocketing in crowds, on transit, and while you travel.
  • WORKS THE MOMENT IT IS IN YOUR WALLET: No batteries, no charging, no app, and nothing to switch on. Protection is automatic and continuous for the life of the card, and the durable, high-quality build holds up to daily wear in a back pocket or bag.
  • A PRACTICAL GIFT THEY WILL ACTUALLY USE: The sleek black finish gives it a premium look that suits travelers, students, parents, and anyone who carries contactless cards. Boxed as a 2-pack, it works for birthdays, holidays, or a stocking filler that quietly protects the people you care about.

That does not make every PayPal-verification email legitimate. If a message mentions PayPal:

  1. Ignore its button and open the Cashback dashboard manually.
  2. Confirm that the balance is marked Complete.
  3. Start the transfer inside the trusted Microsoft/Bing account workflow.
  4. Confirm the PayPal destination there.
  5. Open PayPal independently afterward to check whether the transfer arrived.

Microsoft Cashback should not require you to pay Microsoft before receiving the balance, send money to unlock PayPal, provide a gift card, share a security code or Microsoft password, enter full card details into an unfamiliar page, install remote-access software, or call an unsolicited support number.

Fees, limits, and other terms that cause confusion

No access fee—but a possible inactivity deduction

Microsoft says Cashback is free to join and that it will not ask users to pay to access their cashback. The current terms nevertheless contain an Account Maintenance Fee provision. If an account is considered inactive—no transfer to a redemption account and no Cashback earned during the preceding six months—Microsoft may deduct up to US$5 per month from the existing Cashback balance where legally permitted.

Microsoft says it will not charge or collect that fee from any source other than the Cashback balance. That creates an important distinction:

  • Potentially legitimate: a deduction from an existing balance under the published terms.
  • Not legitimate: an email demanding that you pay an outside fee to release, activate, verify, or access the balance.

The terms page currently displays an update date of August 26, 2024. Because terms can change, check the current terms page for the rules that apply when you verify your account.

Earning limits

The current FAQ and terms state limits of up to US$200 per calendar month and US$1,000 per calendar year. These are program limits, not guaranteed earnings, and individual offers may impose additional restrictions.

Why a real Cashback reward may be delayed, reduced, or denied

A missing or delayed reward does not automatically prove that Microsoft Cashback is fraudulent. Microsoft lists several reasons a qualifying-looking purchase may not track or may later be rejected:

  • The item or purchase was excluded by the merchant’s terms.
  • The user was not enrolled or was not signed in.
  • The offer was not activated.
  • A coupon code was used.
  • Too much time passed after activation.
  • Another affiliate, advertisement, email, browser extension, or shopping tool received attribution.
  • Third-party cookies were disabled.
  • An ad blocker or privacy tool interfered with tracking.
  • The account was flagged for suspected fraud or compliance reasons.
  • The merchant failed to report the purchase or changed its participation.
  • The purchase was returned or otherwise failed the merchant’s conditions.
  • The purchase involved travel, where eligibility may depend on completing the trip.

These are program, tracking, eligibility, or merchant-reporting issues. They should be investigated through the account and terms, not resolved by clicking an unexpected payment request in an email.

What to do in common situations

“I never signed up for Microsoft Cashback.”

Do not click the message. Open the dashboard independently and check enrollment, balance, and activity. Review whether the email is a marketing message, terms update, or claimed reward. If the dashboard shows nothing that matches, report and delete the email.

“The email came from [email protected]. Is it automatically safe?”

No. Microsoft identifies that address as the current official Cashback sender, but the visible From field can be spoofed. Also, recent reporting showed malicious messages abusing a genuine Microsoft notification address. Verify the account and transaction independently.

“It passed SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.”

That is a positive technical signal, not a complete verdict. It may show that the message was authenticated by the sending domain, but it does not establish that the offer is intended for you or that each URL is safe. The independently opened Cashback dashboard is the stronger practical test.

“It did not go to spam.”

Inbox placement is not proof of legitimacy. Phishing messages can pass filters, and legitimate messages can be misclassified.

“The email says I have a balance, but the dashboard does not.”

Consider the email unverified. Do not attempt redemption through it. Preserve the original message if you plan to report it, then report it as phishing.

“The dashboard shows a balance, but the email link looks strange.”

Use the dashboard only. A genuine balance does not make every link in a related email safe.

“Microsoft says I have cashback from a purchase I never made.”

Do not click a cancellation link or call a phone number in the message. Open the merchant’s account independently, check payment accounts separately, and review Microsoft account activity. Fake-order scams use invented transactions to pressure people into calling or clicking. Microsoft’s fake-order scam guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Microsoft Cashback itself legitimate?

Yes. Microsoft Cashback is a real shopping-rebate program. That does not authenticate every email using the Microsoft Cashback name.

Can Microsoft Cashback really pay through PayPal?

Yes, Microsoft’s current U.S. FAQ describes transferring completed rewards to a linked PayPal account. Start the transfer from the independently opened Cashback dashboard, not from an email link.

Is [email protected] a real Cashback sender?

Microsoft’s current U.S. Cashback FAQ identifies it as the sender for official Cashback emails. Treat it as one signal only; verify the message against your account.

Does a Microsoft logo prove the message is genuine?

No. Logos and formatting are easy to copy. The balance and transaction in the independently opened dashboard matter more.

Is a bing.com link automatically safe?

No. Bing is the current host for the Cashback dashboard, but do not trust an email link merely because its displayed text contains Bing or Microsoft. Open the dashboard yourself.

Why is my Cashback still pending?

Many rewards take about 30–90 days, and travel-related purchases can take longer. Coupons, competing affiliate attribution, disabled cookies, ad blockers, browser extensions, returns, merchant reporting, and eligibility rules can also affect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Microsoft deduct an inactivity fee?

The current terms allow, where legally permitted, a deduction of up to US$5 per month from an existing Cashback balance when the account meets the stated inactivity conditions. That is different from asking you to pay an external fee to unlock the balance.

What if the email and dashboard disagree?

Trust neither the email nor its links. Treat the email as suspicious, do not redeem through it, preserve the original if reporting, and use the dashboard and official Microsoft support channels for further investigation.

What if I already entered my password?

Change it immediately from a manually opened Microsoft account page, change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and review recent account activity and connected settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Microsoft Cashback emails a scam?

Yes. Microsoft Cashback is a legitimate shopping-rebate program, but individual emails using its name can still be phishing. Verify the message by manually opening the Cashback dashboard at https://www.bing.com/shop/deals/cashback and checking for matching activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Microsoft Cashback really pay through PayPal?

PayPal redemption is a legitimate Microsoft Cashback feature in the current U.S. FAQ. Start the transfer only from the independently opened Cashback dashboard. Never pay a fee or send money to unlock PayPal.

Is [email protected] a real Microsoft Cashback sender?

Microsoft’s current U.S. Cashback FAQ identifies [email protected] as the sender for official Cashback emails. That address is only a secondary check because visible sender details can be spoofed.

Does reaching my inbox prove the email is legitimate?

No. Inbox delivery, Microsoft logos, and valid-looking domains do not prove that a message is safe. The strongest practical test is whether the balance and transaction appear in the account you open independently.

Why is my Microsoft Cashback still pending or missing?

Many rewards take roughly 30–90 days, while travel-related purchases can take longer. Coupons, competing affiliate links, disabled cookies, ad blockers, extensions, returns, merchant reporting, and eligibility rules can also affect tracking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I entered my Microsoft password?

Change the password immediately from a manually opened Microsoft account page, change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, review recent activity, and check recovery methods, payment options, and connected apps.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Microsoft Cashback is real, and PayPal redemption can be real. But the email is not the trusted route. Open the Cashback dashboard yourself, match the balance and transaction, and redeem only there. Any request for money, passwords, security codes, gift cards, remote access, or an unsolicited phone call is a strong scam signal.
