Islamabad specified a 30-day period starting 4 April; Punjab named several services, with a later report describing Metro Bus and electric buses as free for the month. These are historical announcements, not confirmation that fares are free on 8 October 2026.
Is public transport free in Punjab and Islamabad?
Not on the evidence available for 8 October 2026. The measures were announced in April, and the sources below do not confirm that either policy was extended or remains in force. The petrol price in the headline is also historical: The News reported Rs458.41 per litre on 3 April 2026, following a Rs137.23 increase. It reported high-speed diesel at Rs520.35 per litre after an Rs184.49 increase. Neither figure should be read as a current price.
The announcements were related emergency relief measures, but their stated scope and duration differed.

Which Punjab services were included?
Radio Pakistan reported that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced free travel on the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus Service, Speedo Bus and Green Electric Buses. Passengers using those named services would not need to buy tickets. The announcement described coverage across Punjab’s cities, but does not establish that every bus, private operator, route or intercity service was included.

What happened to other public-transport fares in Punjab?
Free fares on named services should be distinguished from fare controls affecting other transport. On 7 April, Dawn reported that Punjab rejected a proposed 37% increase and set ceilings of up to 25% for diesel-based transport and up to 10% for petrol-based public service vehicles. These were upper limits, not automatic increases for every route or vehicle category. The report said revised fare tables had to be displayed and described enforcement against overcharging.
The Ministry of Planning’s account of the National Price Monitoring Committee meeting on 4 April said officials estimated that fares in major urban centres had risen by an average of 25–30%, with some routes up to 50%. The committee directed provinces to issue revised notifications and enforce them. Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal said: “If subsidies are fully passed on as price increases, their purpose becomes useless,” according to the ministry’s official account.

How to check whether a fare waiver is still operating
Because the published periods refer to April 2026 and no extension is established here, confirm the fare before travelling. Check current notices from the relevant transport authority or service operator, or ask at the station or boarding point. Do not assume the April offer applies to today’s trip.
