Neither announcement, on its own, established that construction was funded or underway. The sources available for this account do not confirm the project’s status after the election.
What was proposed for Kensington?
The Perth Basketball Association, which fields the NBL1 Perth Redbacks, proposed a 12-court indoor sporting and mixed-use community facility in Kensington. The Association said it would manage the venue and use it as a permanent home ground. The Perth Reds Volleyball Association also supported the proposal as a potential home for its association.
Campaign materials described possible use by basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton, schools, community groups and other indoor sports. Those were proposed uses, not a confirmed operating program. The Association said the site was less than one kilometre from its office at Leisurelife, between Curtin University and local schools, and pointed to public transport and nearby schools as advantages. That is the proponent’s site rationale; the material does not establish that Kensington was selected after a published comparison of locations.
How did the Labor and Liberal announcements differ?
| Announcement | Amount and purpose | Status at the time |
|---|---|---|
| Cook Labor Government, November 2024 | $2 million for planning an indoor facility in Perth’s inner southern suburbs. City of South Perth council minutes said planning would assess potential locations and design options, including court numbers and complementary features. | A planning announcement, not confirmation of construction funding. City of South Perth council agenda, 10 December 2024; PerthNow, 16 January 2025. |
| WA Liberal Party, 11 January 2025 | $37.5 million as an election commitment to build the proposed 12-court Kensington facility. | A pledge conditional on the Liberals forming government, not delivered funding. Basketball WA, 11 January 2025. |
The distinction matters: the Labor announcement was for planning work, while the Liberal figure was a construction pledge made by an opposition party before the state election. PerthNow reported on 16 January 2025 that the Redbacks welcomed bipartisan support and that the Association hoped for federal-state cooperation; the report did not say that the two amounts had been combined or that the venue was fully funded.

What demand did supporters cite?
PerthNow reported campaign figures from the Redbacks and their supporters. They indicate the case made for a new venue, but are not independently audited figures in the material cited here.
- The Redbacks reported 2,800 members and more than 1,000 children waiting to join.
- The club was reported to use more than 25 different venues per week on average.
- The Association hoped the proposed venue could serve a population of more than 500,000. This was a projected service population, not a measured attendance or catchment result.
- PerthNow reported 10,529 petition signatures on 16 January 2025. A July 2024 City of South Perth agenda had recorded more than 4,400 signatures at an earlier point in the campaign.
PerthNow’s January 2025 report quoted Redbacks board president Anthony Nixon saying “that this critical project has bipartisan support – we are thrilled with this outcome”. It also quoted Liberal leader Libby Mettam referring to “10,000 petitioners”; that was a rounded figure in her statement, while the report gave the petition count as 10,529.

Was the stadium approved or built?
The announcements covered in the sources establish political support and a planning allocation, not that the Kensington venue received final approval, secured all construction funding or began construction. The Redbacks’ project page said the Association aimed to build within three years if its petition succeeded. That was an aspiration, not a confirmed delivery schedule. Perth Basketball Association’s project page.
The sources used for this account do not establish what happened to the proposal after the March 2025 state election. A current government or Association update is needed to verify later planning outcomes, approvals, funding or construction. Until then, the accurate description is a proposed 12-court Kensington facility, with a Labor planning announcement and a Liberal election commitment—not a completed or confirmed-to-be-underway stadium.
