This ranking covers July through September and the compact crossover class—not every SUV size, luxury model, or electric SUV.
Top-selling U.S. compact crossovers in Q3 2024
The table ranks the first ten models in GM Authority’s U.S. mainstream C-segment crossover comparison. Sales are for the quarter; the percentage change compares each model with Q3 2023.

GM Authority’s Q3 2024 segment report provides the model counts and year-over-year changes. The RAV4 and CR-V were separated by just 76 vehicles in the quarter. The Tucson, third, sold roughly half as many as either leader.
Why this is not a ranking of every SUV
“SUV” spans multiple vehicle classes, but the direct quarterly comparison here is limited to mainstream C-segment, or compact, crossovers. It should not be read as a complete leaderboard covering subcompact, midsize, full-size, luxury, and electric SUVs. A comprehensive ranking would require consistent Q3 data across each class.

Period and geography matter, too. Kelley Blue Book’s separate list ranks all vehicle types by sales from January through September 2024, not SUV sales in Q3 alone. In that year-to-date U.S. list, the RAV4 was third overall at 350,331, the CR-V fourth at 298,164, the Tesla Model Y fifth at 284,831, and the Nissan Rogue ninth at 189,516. Those cumulative figures cannot be mixed with the quarterly compact-crossover counts above to create one ranking. Kelley Blue Book’s through-Q3 ranking makes the period distinction explicit.
State registration data answers a different question from national quarterly sales. For example, the California Auto Outlook report covering the third quarter identifies the RAV4 as California’s compact-SUV leader and breaks out other SUV classes. Those state retail registrations should not be compared directly with national sales counts.

What sales rank can—and cannot—tell you
Sales volume shows how many vehicles were sold under the source’s reporting scope; it does not establish which SUV is the best choice for an individual buyer. A popularity ranking is not evidence of reliability, owner satisfaction, safety, fuel economy, quality, or value. Compare those factors separately using current evidence and criteria relevant to your budget and needs.
