That was a therapist’s account of inquiries to Castle Craig—not a count of admissions, a measure of how many people have a crypto addiction, or evidence of a current surge. Research since then suggests that some cryptocurrency trading can overlap with gambling-related harm, but it does not establish a distinct crypto addiction diagnosis or show that ordinary ownership and long-term investing are addictive.
What the “tenfold increase” actually measured
In an October 5, 2021 Futurism report, Castle Craig therapist Tony Marini described a tenfold increase in inquiries over the preceding year. The report said the Scottish clinic had treated cryptocurrency-related cases since 2018. The figure was attributed to Marini; it was not presented as an independently audited statistic.
Inquiries are not the same as people admitted for treatment. The reported increase does not tell us how many callers became patients, how many were diagnosed with a gambling disorder, or how common harmful trading is in the population. It is also historical: it cannot establish that people are currently flooding into crypto-specific rehabilitation, or how many clinics now offer such care.
Can cryptocurrency trading become a gambling problem?
It can be gambling-like for some people, particularly when trading becomes repetitive, difficult to control, and harmful. But the evidence supports careful language such as “problematic cryptoasset trading” or “harmful trading,” not a blanket claim that cryptocurrency ownership is an addiction. Buying and holding an asset long term is not shown by these findings to be equivalent to compulsive trading.

What the studies found
- Association with mental-health symptoms: A cross-sectional PLOS One survey published May 26, 2026 included 239 participants. Higher problematic cryptoasset trading was associated with greater depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and social isolation. Because the study measured participants at one point in time, it cannot establish which came first or that trading caused those symptoms.
- Trading changes and excessive gambling: A three-wave national survey followed 1,022 Finnish adults aged 18–75, with data collected in April 2021, October–November 2021, and April–May 2022. Adjusted analyses found that within-person increases in cryptocurrency trading predicted increases in excessive gambling. The outcome was excessive gambling behavior; the study did not diagnose crypto addiction.
- A limited evidence base: A 2022 scoping review covered eight eligible studies. It described a likely relationship between problem gambling symptoms and crypto trading, but found mental-health results mixed and called attention to the need to distinguish short-term trading from long-term investing.
Together, these findings raise a legitimate concern about overlap between trading and gambling-related harm. They do not show that cryptocurrency trading causes mental-health problems, that every frequent trader is addicted, or that a separate crypto-specific clinical disorder has been established.
What a crypto rehab clinic claim does—and does not—tell you
Marini’s comments describe one clinic’s reported experience. They should not be generalized to every rehabilitation provider or country. The available reporting does not establish a current count of clinics, their present availability, or comparative outcomes for crypto-specific programs.

Marini also told Decrypt, as quoted in Futurism: “We’re not hearing about the people that have lost lots of money,” he said. “People are so ashamed. They feel so guilty. They don’t want to be talking about it.” This is his observation about people he encountered, not a measured finding about all cryptocurrency traders or a clinical conclusion.
Nor should standard gambling-treatment statistics be mistaken for evidence about crypto rehab. The UK Department of Health and Social Care’s 2024 assessment of England’s 2021–2022 gambling treatment system reports a median treatment duration of 10 weeks and discusses structured psychosocial interventions, CBT, and motivational interviewing. Those figures describe gambling treatment in England during that period—not Castle Craig’s treatment or outcomes for cryptocurrency-specific programs.

When trading may be worth discussing with a professional
The studies above do not provide a diagnostic checklist. A person’s losses, distress, or trading frequency alone cannot establish addiction. If trading feels difficult to control or is causing harm, discussing it with a qualified mental-health professional—especially one experienced in gambling-related problems—can help clarify what is happening and what support may fit. Assessment should consider the person’s behavior and circumstances rather than treating crypto ownership itself as a diagnosis.
For anyone comparing services, relevant questions include the provider’s clinical qualifications and gambling-disorder experience, how assessment and treatment are handled, whether care is residential or outpatient, whether co-occurring conditions are addressed, and what geography, cost, and funding rules apply.
