QPR’s reported £50,000 signing of Les Ferdinand from non-league Hayes in 1987 eventually led to Hayes receiving a reported £600,000 when QPR sold him to Newcastle for £6 million in 1995. The original fee is disputed: the National Football Museum and a 2012 Standard factfile put it at £30,000, while QPR’s season summary gives £50,000.
How much did QPR pay for Les Ferdinand?
Accounts disagree. QPR’s 1986–87 season summary reports a £50,000 fee, but the National Football Museum’s profile and a 2012 Standard factfile each say £30,000. Transfermarkt lists €50,000, which is a euro-denominated database figure, not confirmation of a £50,000 sterling fee. The available accounts do not explain the discrepancy, so the precise fee remains unsettled.
| Stage | Reported amount | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Hayes to QPR, 1987 | £30,000 or £50,000 | The National Football Museum and The Standard report £30,000; QPR’s season summary reports £50,000. |
| QPR to Newcastle, 1995 | £6 million | The reported transfer fee for Ferdinand, according to The Standard and The Non-League Football Paper. |
| Payment to Hayes | £600,000 | Reported as ten percent of the Newcastle fee under a sell-on arrangement. |
Why did Hayes receive money when Ferdinand moved to Newcastle?
Hayes reportedly negotiated a sell-on share when Ferdinand left for QPR. Under the arrangement described by The Non-League Football Paper, Hayes was due ten percent of a later transfer fee. When QPR sold Ferdinand to Newcastle for a reported £6 million in 1995, that share amounted to £600,000. The Standard and The Non-League Football Paper both report the payment.
For Hayes, the mechanism mattered more than the disputed original fee: the club received a share of a future sale after Ferdinand had developed at QPR. The Standard reported that Hayes used the money to build a function suite named The Ferdinand Suite.

How Ferdinand developed at QPR before the sale
QPR signed Ferdinand from Hayes in 1987, but he did not immediately become a first-team regular. He had a brief loan spell at Brentford, followed by a season-long loan at Beşiktaş. After returning to QPR, he established himself as a striker. A 2012 Standard factfile credits him with 80 league goals in 163 QPR appearances.
Ferdinand later summed up the difference between two earlier clubs in an interview quoted by The Non-League Football Paper: “I always say that I was at Southall for three years and they got nothing and I was at Hayes for six months and they got £600,000!”

What the deal shows about sell-on clauses
A sell-on clause can give a smaller club a stake in a player’s later transfer, rather than limiting its return to the initial sale. Hayes’ reported ten-percent share meant it benefited when QPR sold Ferdinand on. The precise original fee is still disputed, and the available accounts do not establish the clause’s full wording, but they report a clear outcome: Hayes received £600,000 from the later deal.
