If you may fly internationally, choose a U.S. passport book: a passport card cannot be used for international air travel. The card is a less expensive, wallet-sized option for certain land and sea trips to the United States. If you expect to use both kinds of travel, you can apply for both.
Passport book vs. card: what each one lets you do
The key difference is not size or price; it is where each document is valid. The U.S. Department of State says a passport book can be used for international travel by air, sea, or land. A passport card is not valid for international air travel.
A card can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and some Caribbean destinations by land or sea. “Some” matters: check that the specific destination and route accept the card before booking. See the State Department’s passport book and card comparison.
Which document fits your trip?

Domestic-flight ID acceptance does not make the card valid for international flights. The card can also be used at Ready Lanes for land border crossings from Canada and Mexico, according to the State Department comparison.

Size, validity, and practical differences
- Passport book: Measures 5 by 3.5 inches and includes visa pages. It supports international travel by air, sea, and land.
- Passport card: Credit-card sized. It is designed for qualifying land and sea travel, not international air travel.
- Validity: Both are valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16, per the State Department’s comparison page.
Passport book and card fees
The U.S. Department of State’s fee chart labeled April 2026 lists the following application fees. A first-time application made on Form DS-11 also requires a separate $35 acceptance fee paid to the acceptance facility. Confirm current charges on the official passport fees page before applying, since fees and requirements can change.

The figures are application fees from the Department of State’s April 2026 fee chart; the first-time DS-11 acceptance fee is separate. The State Department lists adult renewal fees of $130 for a book and $30 for a card. Children under 16 cannot renew and must apply again in person.

Can you apply for both?
Yes. The same application process lets you request a book, a card, or both. An eligible adult who already holds a passport book may apply for a passport card by mail as a renewal, even if it is their first card. The Department of State explains these options in its passport services FAQs.
For most travelers, the decision is straightforward: get a book if international air travel is possible. Consider adding the card if its lower fee and compact format are useful for eligible land or sea crossings. If you only need identification for domestic flights, either document is listed as acceptable ID.
