These nine places offer different ways to stay connected to the arts in retirement, from museums and live performance to film festivals, craft traditions, and university programs. They are discovery options, not a ranked list: the source naming them does not publish a selection method or compare housing costs, healthcare, accessibility, taxes, or overall retirement value.
How to use this list
An “artsy scene” can mean a regular supply of concerts and theater, galleries within walking distance, a craft community, film programming, classes, or opportunities to volunteer. The places below are grouped by the cultural experiences cited for them, not by a score or a claim that one is better for retirement. Venue names and events are leads to verify: schedules, operating status, costs, access, and participation options can change.
SMU DataArts offers one way to understand arts activity at a community level. Its 2024 Arts Vibrancy Index uses 13 measures spanning supply, demand, and public support, with adjustments for population and cost of living. It measures community arts activity—not retirement suitability or whether a particular person will feel culturally at home. SMU DataArts’ 2025 edition, published January 8, 2026, expanded the list to 100 communities and uses Core Based Statistical Areas, which can represent a broader metro or micropolitan region rather than the city proper. Neither edition establishes that every place below appears on its list.
As SMU DataArts Executive Director Jennifer Benoit-Bryan put it in the 2024 executive summary, “The Arts Vibrancy Index illuminates how arts communities have continued to demonstrate their resilience and the undeniable richness they bring to towns and cities across the country.”

Places with a broad mix of arts
Columbus, Ohio: museums, contemporary art, dance, and music
The cited options range from the Columbus Museum of Art and Wexner Center for the Arts to the Short North arts district. BalletMet, ProMusica, and Columbus Symphony add dance and music to the mix. This is the list’s broadest urban assortment of named examples; the list does not establish current calendars, costs, or how easy it is to reach them from a given neighborhood.
Portland, Maine: museum and performing arts near the Old Port
Portland Museum of Art, State Theatre, Portland Symphony Orchestra, and Maine College of Art are among the named draws. The source also describes the Old Port as a walkable arts district. Check venue locations and routes against your own mobility and transportation needs rather than assuming every event or attraction is walkable from every home.

Burlington, Vermont: concerts, jazz, and visual art
The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Vermont Symphony, Discover Jazz Festival, and BCA Center point to a blend of performance, music, visual art, and festival activity. Shelburne Museum is nearby rather than necessarily part of day-to-day life in Burlington, so consider the trip as well as the attraction when assessing the fit.
Places with distinctive cultural anchors
Paducah, Kentucky: crafts and folk art
Paducah’s profile centers on craft and folk art, including its UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art designation and the National Quilt Museum. The Lower Town Arts District and Carson Center for the Performing Arts extend the options beyond craft exhibitions. A designation or museum does not, by itself, tell you how often programming occurs or whether there are classes and volunteer roles that match your interests.

Rank #3
Eureka Springs, Arkansas: galleries and arts learning
The source points to a May Festival of the Arts, about 24 galleries, Opera in the Ozarks, and Eureka Springs School of the Arts. The gallery count and festival timing should be checked with current local listings before relying on them; the count is not established as a current figure.
Provincetown, Massachusetts: an art-colony tradition
Provincetown’s arts identity is represented by the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and Fine Arts Work Center. The source describes a seasonal cadence, so prospective residents should check opening days and program calendars across different parts of the year instead of judging the town by a single visit.
Rank #4
Places with film, university, and performance programming
Charlottesville, Virginia: film and theater in a university setting
Named options include the Virginia Film Festival, Paramount Theater, University of Virginia arts programming, McGuffey Art Center, and Heritage Theatre Festival. The Downtown Mall is another central arts venue. These examples span film, theater, and university-linked programming, but the list gives no current schedule or price information.
Missoula, Montana: documentary film and music
The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, Missoula Symphony, University of Montana School of Music, and Roxy Theater offer leads across film and music. The source also characterizes Missoula as highly ranked in a medium-city arts-vibrancy category, but does not establish the underlying edition or placement clearly enough to treat that ranking as current. SMU DataArts’ index is community-level context, not a substitute for checking the specific entry and geographic area.

Traverse City, Michigan: local stages and a nearby arts campus
Traverse City’s named options include the Traverse City Film Festival, State Theatre, City Opera House, Old Town Playhouse, and Dennos Museum. Interlochen Center for the Arts, on a nearby campus, is an important part of the mix described by the source. Factor in the distance and transportation required to attend campus events; “nearby” is not the same as in town.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether a place fits your retirement
Start with the cultural activities you would actually use, then test the practical conditions that determine whether they can become part of ordinary life. Retirement guides from The Hartford and Topretirements frame culture alongside factors such as healthcare, finances, recreation, housing, and community. Those are useful comparison axes, not evidence that these nine places perform equally well on them.
- Prioritize your arts mix. Decide whether you want museums, live performance, film, music, craft traditions, classes, or chances to volunteer. A town with many venues may still be a poor match if its strongest offerings are not the ones you enjoy.
- Check where and when activity happens. Confirm current calendars, venue locations, seasonal openings, and whether events are in town or require a drive to a neighboring community or campus.
- Compare housing and everyday costs consistently. The source list does not provide a current, comparable cost-of-living or housing analysis for all nine places. Use the same date range and measures when comparing candidate communities, and distinguish purchase prices from recurring expenses.
- Investigate healthcare and access separately. The list does not compare hospitals, specialists, public transportation, or accessibility. Check the care and mobility arrangements you need rather than inferring them from a city’s cultural profile.
- Test climate, geography, and community preferences. A retirement-forum poster’s wish for a medium-cost, college-town setting near lakes, mountains, or the ocean while avoiding extreme heat or very long winters illustrates how personal these filters can be. It is an anecdote, not survey evidence; apply your own priorities to each location.
For additional art-town ideas, Topretirements names John Villani’s 100 Best Art Towns in America as further reading. It is not the ranking method behind this nine-place list, and current edition and availability details are not established here.
