What Tyler Perry actually announced
Perry’s comments, reported after an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on February 22–23, 2024, concerned a planned investment of approximately $800 million. The proposal had reportedly been under consideration for about four years and would have added 12 soundstages and expanded production capacity at the former Fort McPherson property in southwest Atlanta.
The campus is widely reported as covering roughly 330 acres. It supports Perry’s own film and television work and earns revenue by renting stages and backlot facilities to other productions, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The important wording is “currently and indefinitely on hold.” That describes a pause in a proposed capital project, not a formal cancellation notice. The available reporting does not show that construction on the 12-stage expansion had been completed or that Perry had legally terminated the project.

What Perry saw in Sora
OpenAI unveiled the first public Sora demonstrations on February 15, 2024. The system generated short videos from written prompts, including moving-camera shots, people, and elaborate environments. A producer could describe a location or visual scenario without traveling there, building a physical set, or commissioning traditional concept art first.
That prospect could affect the economics of some productions:
- Background locations and set extensions might be generated or altered digitally.
- Some location travel and physical construction could be reduced.
- Small productions could obtain highly stylized imagery without a full physical build.
- Studios might need fewer stages for particular categories of scenes.
But the February 2024 material was a research preview, not evidence that Sora could independently deliver a feature film. OpenAI acknowledged problems with unrealistic physics and complex actions over longer durations. Access was limited to selected researchers and video creators at the time, as described by The Guardian.
Why a video demonstration could change a construction decision
A studio campus is a long-lived capital asset. The question for Perry was not whether a 2024 demo could replace every crew member the next morning. It was whether technology developing rapidly enough could reduce future demand before new stages recovered their cost.
A pause can therefore be a way to preserve flexibility while a company reassesses utilization, financing, and payback. Perry’s reaction was an economic hypothesis about the next several years, not proof that physical production had already become obsolete.
Where substitution is more plausible
- Previsualization, storyboards, mood reels, and pitch material.
- Short advertisements, social clips, inserts, and stock-style footage.
- Set extensions or background replacement combined with live-action photography.
- Some concept-development and location-scouting work.
Where a physical studio still provides capabilities
- Recorded dialogue and directed performances.
- Controlled lighting, camera movement, wardrobe, makeup, props, and practical effects.
- Stunts and physical action that must be repeatable and safe.
- Continuity across many shots and scenes.
- Actors’ likeness, consent, and contractual controls.
- On-set collaboration among performers, directors, cinematographers, and crew.
- Legal chain-of-title, music, sound, editing, and distribution work.
A visually convincing clip may still fail because an identity changes between frames, an action obeys no physical logic, a shot cannot be reproduced, or the output’s provenance and rights are unclear. Generating many alternatives and supervising them can also shift costs into review, correction, compliance, and post-production.
The labor question
Perry said he was concerned that “a lot of jobs” could be lost and called for the entertainment industry to organize around regulation and worker protection. The potential exposure extends beyond camera operators to actors, background performers, set builders, location workers, visual-effects artists, production accountants, and other support staff.

The episode also shows a genuine tension. AI may lower production costs and create new creative options, while those same savings can reduce paid work. Pausing a construction project could itself defer construction and future production jobs, even if the intention is to protect the business from investing in capacity that might later be underused.

How to evaluate the “AI replaces stages” claim
- Identify the task. A storyboard or background plate is a smaller substitution than a finished dramatic scene.
- Measure repeatability. Can the same characters, props, camera move, and lighting be produced consistently across a sequence?
- Check human and legal requirements. Confirm performer consent, likeness rights, provenance, licensing, and contractual restrictions.
- Count the whole workflow. Include editorial, sound, music, color, visual effects, review, storage, and compliance—not only generation time.
- Compare utilization risk. A physical stage may remain valuable for live performances and practical work even if some digital environments move elsewhere.
For current experimentation, tools such as Runway and Adobe Firefly may serve previsualization or short-form workflows, but their availability, model access, credits, and licensing terms change. Runway’s plan documentation is at its official help center. Adobe describes its Firefly Video Model and commercial-safety positioning at Adobe’s announcement. Neither should be treated as a one-click substitute for a stage, crew, performers, or a complete long-form production.
What remains unknown about the Atlanta expansion
The sources available for this account do not establish whether the 12-stage project later resumed, was redesigned, or was permanently abandoned.
