The eight patterns below are documented by Cash App, but they are not an official ranking by danger or prevalence. A screenshot of a payment or message is not proof that money was sent or that a request is legitimate. Never share a sign-in code, password, PIN, or full debit-card number with someone who contacts you.
How to recognize a Cash App scam
Cash App identifies four broad warning signs: unexpected contact, pressure to act quickly, unusual payment requests, and requests for personal or login information. A polished message can still be fraudulent, so typos alone are not a reliable test.
- Pause when a stranger demands secrecy, threatens consequences, or insists you act immediately. Verify the claim through a separate, trusted channel.
- Open Cash App directly rather than following a link in a text, email, or social-media message. Check your actual balance and activity in the app.
- Confirm the recipient and payment details before sending. Do not treat a caller ID, payment screenshot, or copied logo as verification.
- Enable account security features such as Security Lock.
Cash App says its representatives will never ask for your password, PIN, or full debit-card number. Its U.S. Terms of Service list 1-800-969-1940 as the only Cash App support phone number. For support, use the official app or that published number rather than a number supplied by an unsolicited message. Cash App U.S. Terms of Service · Cash App Help
What are the most common Cash App scams?
These are eight practical examples of patterns Cash App documents. They are not an official ranking, and the available sources do not establish Cash App-specific prevalence rates for all eight.
#1 Best Overall
1. Fake rental or purchase listings
A scammer copies a real property or product listing, offers an attractive price, then pressures you to pay a deposit before you can inspect the item or confirm who owns it. Cash App describes fake apartment, car, and expensive-product listings as examples of purchase or rental scams. Verify a property with its owner or manager, inspect it in person or through a reliable live walkthrough, and do not send a deposit solely to reserve an unverified listing. 2. Impersonation of Cash App, a bank, government, or someone you trust
A scammer may pose as support staff, a financial institution, a government agency, a celebrity, a friend, a relative, or a business. The story may involve a suspicious payment, a locked account, an emergency, threatened benefits, or a warrant. Do not provide login credentials or send money to “fix” the issue. Contact the organization using contact details you find independently; for a friend or family member, verify the request through a known number or another trusted channel. Cash App says legitimate companies, banks, and government agencies will not ask for your PIN, password, or sign-in code by call, text, or email. 3. Phishing text, email, or fake website
An unsolicited message may claim a payment was sent or your account will be suspended, then ask you to follow a link and verify your credentials. The address may resemble Cash App but contain misspellings, extra words, or an unfamiliar domain. Do not use the link. Open the app directly or enter the official address yourself, then check account activity there. Cash App: Avoiding common scams
4. Romance or relationship scam
Someone you meet on a dating app or social media builds trust, moves the conversation elsewhere, and later invents a medical, travel, or short-term cash emergency. Requests can start small and grow, often alongside a plea to keep the relationship or request secret. Do not send money to someone you have not met or independently verified; talk the situation over with someone you trust. Cash App’s August 2026 guide attributes $298 million in 2025 romance-scam losses to the FTC. That is a broad reported-loss figure, not a Cash App-specific total. Rank #3
5. Fake giveaway, prize, or money flip
A supposed influencer, brand, or stranger promises a cash prize or claims they can multiply a small payment. They may ask for a fee, a payment first, or account information to “release” the money. Cash App describes money flips such as sending $100 with a promise of $1,000 in return; fake payment screenshots may be offered as proof. A screenshot does not verify a transfer, and a legitimate prize should not require a fee to claim. Cash App: Avoiding common scams · Cash App: Scam prevention
6. Accidental payment or overpayment refund scam
A scammer may send money from a compromised or stolen account, then ask you to return it as a separate payment. In an overpayment variation, a fake buyer pays more than the agreed amount and requests the difference. If the original transfer is later reversed, you could lose the separate amount you sent. Do not send a new payment to “refund” the money. Ask the sender to cancel it from their side, and use Cash App’s process for refunding the original transaction where appropriate. 7. Investment or cryptocurrency pitch
A new online contact or supposed expert directs you to an investment platform showing implausible returns, then asks for more money or a Cash App payment. A convincing dashboard or a trusted relationship does not prove that an investment is real. Do not send money based on a social-media pitch. Cash App’s August 2026 guide attributes more than $7.9 billion in 2025 investment-scam losses to the FTC; that figure covers reported investment scams broadly, not Cash App-only losses. 8. Tech-support or device-compromise scam
A fake pop-up or caller claims your phone or computer has been compromised and asks for remote access, credentials, or payment. Remote-access software can let a scammer steal information or capture credentials. Do not install software or grant access at the direction of an unsolicited caller. If you already did, use a trusted device to change affected passwords, review your accounts, and contact the relevant service provider. Are Cash App scam screenshots real?
A screenshot alone cannot establish that a message came from Cash App, that a payment cleared, or that a person is who they claim to be. The Cash App guidance cited here describes scam wording and tactics but does not provide authenticated scam-message screenshots. Any recreated example should be labeled “Illustrative example—not an actual Cash App message.” If you save a real suspicious message for reporting, keep the original details and redact personal information before sharing it publicly.
Cash App recommends preserving screenshots of messages, sender details, links, and transaction records as evidence. Cash App: Spot and avoid scams
Can you get money back after a Cash App scam?
It depends on the transaction type and circumstances; a refund is not guaranteed. Cash App says authorized peer-to-peer payments can be difficult to reverse. Its statement that payments often cannot be recovered refers to P2P payments, not every type of transaction. By contrast, Cash App’s Zero Fraud Liability language concerns unauthorized Cash App Card transactions reported within 60 days and is subject to the applicable terms. Report the problem promptly and follow the dispute process for the payment involved. Cash App: Scam prevention · Cash App U.S. Terms of Service
Cash App has reported that, as of November 2024, more than 20,000 customers had been reimbursed for verified impostor and deception scams, with 90% fully compensated. This is a company-reported result for the program and verified scam types described, not a promise that every customer or scam payment will be reimbursed. Cash App: Scam prevention

- Stop contact. Do not send more money, share a code, click more links, or grant remote access. Block the suspected scammer.
- Report it in Cash App. Use the app’s reporting process for the person or transaction. If you paid, report the transaction and follow the instructions for that original payment.
- Contact linked financial institutions. If a bank account or card was involved, tell the bank or card issuer promptly and ask what steps apply to that transaction.
- Secure affected accounts. Change compromised passwords from a trusted device, review account activity, and monitor linked accounts.
- Save evidence. Keep messages, sender details, links, and transaction records. Do not alter the evidence you retain for a report.
- Report the scam to the FTC. Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If sensitive identity information was exposed, consider placing a free credit freeze.
Cash App’s recovery guide attributes over $12.5 billion in 2024 reported consumer fraud losses to the FTC. That broad figure is not specific to Cash App. Cash App: Spot and avoid scams
